Infrared thermography: outer beauty provides no guarantees

A wind power turbine's rotor blades can look perfect and flawless upon visual inspection, but faults are often located in deeper layers and are not visible to the naked eye. The Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute for Wood Research (WKI) has developed an infrared thermography method for such testing and will be demonstrating at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009 how it can be used to quickly and cost-effectively detect material defects.

An infrared transmitter is used to briefly heat the surface of the glass fiber mat rotor blades. A special camera then displays how the warm front spreads through the material. If the front encounters air pockets or delaminations, the heat accumulates as it does not dissipate through air as easily as it does through the compact laminate. Such occurrences are highlighted by the camera and this helps to identify defects. The full kit, consisting of infrared transmitter, camera and computer, is mobile and can thus be used to test already erected winder power turbines. The Fraunhofer researchers consider a careful examination of the rotor blades to be extremely important, because, when the turbine blades are subjected to everyday stress, such defects can cause mechanical tension, which may result in the laminate rupturing.

Robot Roman: Hi-tech domestic help reacts to speech and signal
s

It does not (yet) have any arms or legs, but in most other respects, Roman the robot, from the Kaiserslautern Technical University, already mimics human beings very well. He will be demonstrating his skills for the first time at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009. His torso is already almost as flexible as its human equivalent, and his sight and hearing are just as good. A keyboard and mouse are not required for communication with Roman. He reacts to speech, facial expressions and gestures by carefully observing movement and verbal expressions and analyzing these in his computerized brain.

Roman stands for RObot huMan interAction machiNe and is intended as a domestic service robot for the future. As many people, especially the aged, have relatively little technical knowledge, the operation of such a robot must be possible by means of natural human-machine interaction i.e. with the least possible technology involved. The next developmental step for Roman will be the addition of moving arms in order to allow him to make gestures too.

Intelligent RFID label for transport monitoring

An increasing number of businesses are making use of electronic data transmission and Radio Frequency Identification i.e. the wireless tracking of objects. At the HANNOVER MESSE 2009, researchers from the Fraunhofer Facility for Electronic Nanosystems (ENAS) will be presenting an intelligent RFID label that is suitable for monitoring the transportation of high-quality goods.

During the transport, the label records temperature, inclination and vibrations. A sensor system allows the data to be logged, saved and read at any time via RFID. The label is a result of the BMBF (German Federal Ministry for Education and Research) cooperative ASIL project, in which Fraunhofer ENAS has worked together with the partners KSW Microtec, ELMOS Semiconductor AG, Schenker Deutschland AG, memsfab GmbH and the Chemnitz Technical University Center for Microtechnologies.

Clean magic (Sauber-Zauber): small particles, great effect

Some red wine drops onto the light colored tie, but leaves behind no stain. The fluid simply runs off the fine material. This clean magic trick is only revealed when viewed under an electron microscope. Small molecule-sized pimples protrude from the surface and physically and chemically prevent wine or dirt from touching the surface.

The tiny structures, which are millions of times smaller than a pinhead, give the material fantastic qualities. In its 'NanoTruck' at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) shows how these molecular structures and systems can change the characteristics of traditional products by means of special application processes. Over 60 exhibits will be on show to help make nanotechnology comprehensible.

Airborne drones to measure air pollution

Huge palls of black smoke hang over a city and nobody knows what toxic substances are contained in the thick haze. In the future, analysis of such toxic gases will be carried out by an armada of airborne drones. This will involve the machines working together as an intelligent swarm and exchanging data with each other. The Berlin Technical University will be presenting the AirShield project at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009 - which consists of independently acting robots that communicate wirelessly with each other and with a control center in order to allow optimal deployment over an area of danger. The drones will use sensors to identify poisonous clouds, analyze their composition and create a resulting map.

The interdisciplinary project is sponsored by the federal government and by nine commercial partners. In conjunction with this, the Berlin Technical University is also investigating how technology acceptance, public procurement and standardization are contributing to the establishment of a German lead market for security technology.

The socket comes too

The cars of the future will be driven by electricity. Automobile manufacturers and the German government are aiming to have a million e-vehicles on the German roads by 2020. At the HANNOVER MESSE 2009, Clean Mobile AG will be demonstrating fuel cell powered hybrid drives for use in small vehicles, such as electric delivery carts, e-bikes, wheelchairs and scooters. The advantage: the socket for recharging comes too!

The electrical energy required is produced from methanol in an environmentally friendly process - the emissions are only water, heat and an extremely small amount of CO2. The vehicles are not only energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, but are also cheap to run; with a liter of methanol, costing about 50 euro cents, the electric vehicle can cover around 200 kilometers.

Black magic and petting zoo

Close physical contact with hi-tech materials: the Schunk Group's 'petting zoo for materials' makes this possible. This year will see the company appearing at the HANNOVER MESSE for the third time as a partner of the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure e. V. Association of German Engineers). As part of the VDI 'make things happen' regional initiative, the Schunk Group will be bringing with it, amongst other things, materials that can withstand temperatures of 3,000 degrees Celsius. 'Touching expressly permitted' is the name of the game with, for example, carbon fiber composites, graphite materials and ceramics.

'Black magic' will also be on offer: 'floating graphite' and carbon fiber reinforced materials that can be worked on with hammer and nails without being damaged will be on show. Anyone who gets a taste for the materials in the 'petting zoo' can go to the internet platform www.ingenieurparadies.de and test new material combinations themselves with a materials configurator.

Finally clean!

halstrup-walcher GmbH has focused on the theme of clean room and hygiene regulations in the area of food production and will be presenting positioner systems with stainless steel housings at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009. With a protection rating of IP 68, they are washable and resistant to alkalis, which makes them perfect for use in the food and beverages industries.

The advantages offered by these hygienic stainless steels systems are considerable: clean rooms no longer need to be entered by people in order to adjust the formats of machines. This means that there is no risk of contamination and the need for costly and time consuming sterilization of the rooms can be avoided. The halstrup-walcher process monitoring device PUC 24, with its measurement technology and stainless steel housing, is also specifically designed for use in clean rooms.

Earthquake-proof Walls

Many walls aren't strong enough to stand the stresses that can be experienced in earthquake-prone regions. This can result in buildings falling like houses of cards in the event of a large earthquake. The Sächsische Textilforschungsinstitut e. V. (STFI - Saxony Textiles Research Institute) will be demonstrating at the HANNOVER MESSE 2009 how such masonry structures can be reinforced. The hybrid reinforcement of materials, by means of integrated highly elastic strengthening, increases the load bearing capacity of masonry, as shown by the institute's laboratory experiments.

With masonry tests, the scientists have also determined that a multi-level construction of the material with an orthogonal configuration of the fibers, as well as the use of a special water vapor permeable mortar, allows large deformations while preserving the cohesion of the masonry components. This increases the protection against a total collapse of masonry structures. Cracks and fissures are also less likely to cause problems. The particular advantages of this strengthening method are its ease of implementation and the minimal application effort required.

The racing car CarboNyte gets up to speed in just four seconds

KaRaT stands for the Kaiserslautern Racing Team e. V. which is based at the Kaiserslautern Technical University. The only Formula Student racing team from the German state of Rhineland Palatinate was founded in February 2007 by 30 university students. At the HANNOVER MESSE 2009, karat-racing will be demonstrating how it was possible to build a real racing car based on a Suzuki GSX-R 600 K4 in just one year, with the support of 48 sponsors.

A 6-speed gearbox, 76 PS and a flat-4 cylinder configuration enable the racing car, which is called CarboNyte, to accelerate from a standing start to 100km/h in just four seconds. Formula Student is a competition for teams from universities in various countries in which the teams compete against each other on well-known race tracks with racing cars constructed by the students. The competitions involve the testing of various aspects, such as acceleration and endurance, and even cost analyses and business plans are included in the overall classification.

In 2008, CarboNyte took part in races at Silverstone/UK, Hockenheim/Germany and Fiorano/Italy.
