LI²SA puts fine dust under scrutiny

In Germany's cities, this summer is once again likely to herald levels of fine dust that exceed the given thresholds. At HANNOVER MESSE 2009, researchers from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg are introducing LI²SA, the newly developed nanoparticle sensor that aims to reveal more about these dangerous little dust particles.

Conventional methods of measuring fine dust simply record all particles smaller than 10 µm. That poses a problem because the smaller the dust particles, the more dangerous they are for humans. Now, however, LI²SA is also able to record the concentration of particles of particular sizes. Even dust in concentrations of less than 5µg/m³ can't get past LI2SA!

The world's strongest robot puts on a powerful performance

The "KR 1000 titan" has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's strongest robot. No other robot is capable of shifting a ton of weight. Visitors to HANNOVER MESSE 2009 can witness the industrial robot flexing his muscles at the Goeke Technology Group stand.

Developed by Kuka, the robot will be put to work on an assembly island, moving a VW Golf VI while another robot measures the wheel hub and then fits a wheel. Tasks like these are child's play for this colossus of the robot world. Until "KR 1000 titan" arrived on the scene, at least two robots or complex special kinematics were required to handle such heavy parts.

Protect your company's innovations

At HANNOVER MESSE 2009, stunning innovations await around virtually every corner. It's no surprise, then, that there are also various methods available to help protect such innovations from falling into the hands of counterfeiters. But how is it actually possible to provide complete protection for a company's know-how? Visitors to the Avalano stand will be able to find out for themselves.

This new company is an offshoot of the Institute of Product Development at the Technische Universität München (TU München). According to the company's founders, Avalano provides a unique service, with manufacturers receiving a full spectrum of protection for their know-how and products. The company's services include an in-depth analysis of the customer's scenarios. Avalano uses this to determine which of the around 90 protective measures contained in its portfolio should be implemented for this specific case. This process takes a very varied selection of factors into account, including legal, technical, organizational, product design and strategic matters.

Avalano then draws up a comprehensive rollout concept. KPIs are an important part of this, as they make it possible to evaluate whether the measures introduced actually achieve the intended level of success.

With Streetstepper, even steep hills are a walkover!

With an automatic three-gear transmission, this piece of equipment proves fitness really is on the move! At HANNOVER MESSE 2009, Hermann Blechtechnik is showcasing what it claims is the healthiest outdoor sporting device on the market.

The secret of the Streetstepper is that it uses an upright posture and regular step movements to create a combination of running and cycling. The two-wheeled vehicle is powered by the rider using a typical stepping motion to press down on two separate pedal-style levers. With this piece of kit, even uphill stretches with an incline of more than 15 percent can be tackled easily! Markus Kröll, one of the best mountain runners in the world, trains using a version of the Streetstepper. He says: "It's an excellent way for any runner to train!"

Increased safety for exclusive quads and bikes

Motorbikes and quads that are produced only as limited series have a special appeal for many people. Unfortunately, they often also have one significant disadvantage compared to mass-produced models - their specially developed components are not generally checked for structural durability. Now, researchers from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences aim to make this safety loophole a thing of the past with their newly developed testing system for identifying structural durability. The system is on display at HANNOVER MESSE 2009.

Until now, SMEs have had to rely on their own experience when developing components for smaller vehicles. This is because the methods usually employed in the automotive industry to determine the structural durability of small vehicles consume a considerable amount of time and money. With this new testing system, small-series vehicle and motorbike manufacturers will be able to check the structural durability of their components with only limited outlay. The stresses that occur while a motorbike or quad is in operation can be determined on a single test bench and within a very short timeframe. In the space of just 72 hours, stresses on the individual vehicle components are tested on a virtual course of around 100,000 kilometers.

Power at a consistently good price!

In today's manufacturing companies, sourcing power is about more than just sticking a plug into a socket - it's all about purchasing power at the best price possible. At HANNOVER MESSE 2009, EGT Energiehandel is revealing a particularly intelligent way of doing just that.

Alongside its other exhibits, the energy company is presenting the new online purchasing tool "Follow the Market", the first of its kind within the industry. This tool gives industrial companies the power to determine how low their energy charges should be over the next three years. Using the online tool, the companies can monitor fluctuations on the power market 24 hours a day before making their move when the price reaches what they feel is the right level.  They can then set this price in advance for the next three years.

Equally unique is the online calculation tool "Energy on Demand" for quotes from EGT Energiehandel.  Binding quotes are supplied along with a clear, quick overview of the potential savings SMEs in the industrial sector could make on their power costs. It is then a simple matter to compare this overview with current figures.

Virtual meeting rooms for global project teams

Companies that work on a global scale to implement their projects either send their staff traveling around the world - which wastes time and energy - or organize telephone conferences that can frequently prove unproductive due to the limited options they offer. realicon, a leading provider of complex visualization technologies for industrial planning processes, is at HANNOVER MESSE 2009 to showcase ways of optimizing corporate communications across the globe.

The new 4D module vc4D NET is celebrating its debut in Hannover. As the logical extension to the long-established vc4D software, the module uses tried-and-tested methods to create interactive, four-dimensional representations. One new feature is the synchronized interaction of users in far-flung locations - up till now, 4D communication was only possible locally. Using vc4D NET, Heppenheim-based realicon aims to set up virtual rooms online that can be accessed from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.

As a result, all of the (virtual) participants can see and hear exactly what is going on in the team meeting at the same time. The manufacturer ensures standardized communication thanks to absolutely identical scenes delivered in real time. Not only does vc4D NET represent an effective extension of the vc4D communication software, it also makes an important contribution to conserving resources and the environment, as it cuts down the number of business trips staff are required to make.

Sensors with a feel for culture

Museums, libraries, historical buildings and other sites of cultural interest all share the same problem - maintaining exactly the right climate in their rooms. The atmosphere in any such room has to fulfill certain conditions in order to protect the works of art it houses but it also has to be suitable and comfortable for visitors. The new sensors being exhibited by Fulda University of Applied Sciences at HANNOVER MESSE 2009 are set to resolve this dilemma, as they are able to determine the conditions that best suit humans and cultural artifacts alike.

The display includes a probe that can identify tension and stress in paintings and musical instruments. One of the other sensors on show demonstrates that, although books play an important role in counteracting the presence of moisture in libraries, this also has a significant and detrimental impact upon them. In addition, the researchers have developed a probe suitable for measuring the onset of mold on pieces of graphic art hung on external walls.

Inspiration from space…

Anyone who thinks that aerospace research goes completely over their head will soon change their mind when they visit the MST Aerospace stand at HANNOVER MESSE 2009. They will discover that such research also brings considerable benefits for those of us who are quite happy to stay here on Earth! Visitors will be able to see this for themselves when Paralympic champion Wojtek Czyz pays a visit to the stand at 2 p.m. on Monday, 20 April 2009. The sportsman claimed a gold medal with the help of a prosthetic created using technology inspired by aerospace research.

In another exciting highlight, the first German woman in space Sonja Rohde will also be at the stand from 3 p.m. the same day to share her experiences with visitors.

Hydrogen as a source of power

Fossil fuels are due to run out in the not so very distant future. That's why researchers are now setting themselves the task of creating a replacement source of energy. The scientists from the "Unifying Concepts in Catalysis" (UniCat) cluster of excellence in Berlin and Brandenburg have their own vision of how this could be achieved. With the help of catalysts, they want to use light and water to create hydrogen that will then serve as a source of power. Molecular hydrogen is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels there is, as it releases a great deal of energy when combusted with oxygen and produces water as its only "waste product".

The researchers plan to create a renewable, emission-free cycle consisting of hydrogen production using light and water on one hand, and power generation using hydrogen in special enzymatic fuel cells on the other. At HANNOVER MESSE 2009, the scientists are demonstrating how a mini biological fuel cell can generate power using hydrogen and oxygen.
