HOT TOPICS - Innovations at HANNOVER MESSE 2010 (19 to 23 April)

Piezo-Parquet: Walking your way to power

Generating electricity by walking across the floor - this idea occurred to entrepreneur Manfred Krause, who developed the first "Piezo-Parquet" flooring, now premiering at HANNOVER MESSE 2010. The principle behind the innovation is as simple as it is ingenious: The kinetic energy produced by driving or walking across a surface can be used to supply power to small appliances and sensors.

When someone walks across Krause's novel parquet floor, they activate tiny, hidden piezo-elements, producing low-voltage power which is then stored in miniature batteries. This energy is made available to small consumer devices, with zero maintenance required. The system can be used for things like illuminating staircases during power outages, or for powering dynamic markers or warning signals. Piezo-Parquet is a "Bavarian High-Tech in the 21st Century" project, promoted by the Bavarian Research Foundation under the name of "Parquet Power".

Mini-stackers as hot new learning tools

Forklift robots are employed to automatically lift loads and carry them to the right unloading destination. But how are they programmed so that all of this actually works? At HANNOVER MESSE 2010 the Technical University of Kaiserslautern is presenting a mini-forklift which serves as a model for students of robotic programming.

The mini-forklifts are use primarily in the educational sphere so that students can learn more about programming embedded systems. The autonomous little stackers are programmed to find randomly distributed loads around the track and then transport them to a predefined destination. The students develop the necessary control programs on a parallel basis in a simulated environment using real robots.

The students learn how to perform a complex project from the initial planning phase to specification and implementation, ending with production of a complete system. By using the same development tools as are applied to "big" systems, the students can get a first-hand feel for the challenges of a real development environment.

Mini E and power management

E.ON is offering visitors a first-hand look at the ins and outs of energy management at its exhibition stand at HANNOVER MESSE 2010, where they can experiment with an interactive exhibit and develop a feel for the triple challenge of ensuring the security of supply while achieving cost efficiencies and climate-friendliness in electric power generation.

Players must cooperate to ensure that power is produced in the most environmentally compatible fashion, at a low cost and with a minimum of overcapacity in response to fluctuating demand, all while guaranteeing a secure energy supply. They are able to deploy different types of power plants, with all the different characteristics involved. A specialist is on hand to explain the complexities of the various models within the scope of the interactive exercise.

Anyone who prefers a less abstract endeavor will want to take a closer look at the new Mini E, which since june 2009 is the object of a joint field test by BMW and E.ON in Munich. This test will probe the "everyday aptitude" of electromobility in the form of a trendy electric car. E.ON is providing the testers with 15 Mini E charging stations in the city as well as in their own garages. The power for the charging stations will be supplied primarily in the form of CO2 emission-free energy generated by hydro power.

Keyboard disappears in stainless steel drawer

Too much paper on your desk, and you can sometimes lose sight of the keyboard. Now a new stainless steel "keyboard in a drawer" from Printec-DS has the answer: Just tuck it away when you need to do paperwork, and pull it out again when you want to type. This innovation for esthetes can be viewed at the company's stand during HANNOVER MESSE 2010.

The newly developed drawer has already been patented. Its profile rail uses ball bearings for precise guidance, providing the user with a high degree of stability and ease of use. A number of different keyboard layouts are available. And the stainless steel keyboard is also available with number block and 38-mm stainless steel track ball. It has 103 keys (optionally 107), a key drop of 3.2 millimeters and is said to offer an outstanding writing experience.

Barrier-free access, thanks to scissor-lift stairs - New options for listed buildings in the 21st century

Many old buildings, especially historically listed ones, are incapable of providing barrier-free access for disabled persons. But now a new lift stairs, being presented by the Carestairs company at HANNOVER MESSE 2010, appears to have the solution: Thanks to a scissor lift design, it can be installed even in older buildings without needing to make major structural changes.

The new lift stairs is easily adapted to fit existing stair constellations and can be walked on in any operating position, i.e. can also be used as an emergency exit. Take the short flight of stairs at a building entrance, for example:

The scissor-lift stairs has a flat section for easy access. When the end of this first section is reached, the platform is raised by the scissor lift, and a new section of stairs folds down behind the user. At the same time, the steps ahead are flattened, and the user can proceed. The building's original appearance remains unchanged, free of ramps or wheelchair lifts. The company involved in developing this product is setting up a production facility in Brandenburg and applying for TÜV certification.

Beer in a bag in a box

Beer lovers will hardly believe it, but in the future, their favorite brew can be transported in a type of tetra pack - a so-called "bag in a box" - instead of a keg. The Ankerbräu brewery is using this new packaging for four different types of beer. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010 it will show the public how this unconventional principle actually works.

Ankerbräu is the world's first brewery to use a 25-liter "bag in a box" as a packaging solution. The first step is to remove the carbon dioxide from the freshly brewed beer before filling it into the bag. When the beer is later tapped, a proprietary carbonator replenishes the carbon dioxide inline, for a beer which looks and tastes just like its freshly tapped cousin, according to the brewer.

The carbonator developed by Ankerbräu can be integrated in any dispensing equipment and offers numerous advantages: There is no deposit or return transport required, and the beer can be stored for a longer period of time (up to eight months after the filling date). It is also easy to use and at the same time hygienic, explains the brewer.

World premier: Machine tool recognizes counterfeit spare parts

Counterfeit products not only spell business losses for mechanical engineering firms, but can also lead to material damages due to the poor quality of the parts involved. Now the world debut of a machine tool developed by ProOriginal HANNOVER MESSE 2010 promises a solution to the problem.

Based on a Deckel Maho DMC 65H , the machine tool prototype is the first of its kind which can verify the authenticity of the components inside it by deploying a Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl module. This will be demonstrated at the exhibitor's stand based on the example of a Weiss motor shaft as well as a maintenance unit and valve terminal from Festo. The machine can detect whether an imitation product has been built into the product, in which case an alarm is triggered.

Mini-satellite teams and robot vehicle cliques

Among the highlights at the ESA stand during HANNOVER MESSE 2010 is a small cube measuring only 10 cm³. This is actually the new UWE3 satellite, whose new positioning feature allows earth-based control to actively influence its position in space.

Another attraction at the stand involves the robot vehicle Merlin, which is a result of ESA's Mars Rover development work. Merlin uses the same technology as UWE satellites for its sensory system, communications and data processing, allowing for ruggedly adaptive driving behavior even on rough terrain. What the mini-satellites and robot vehicles have in common: Several vehicles or satellites can autonomously form a team to facilitate the implementation of complex tasks.

Golfing with the Nanoball

Impressive new developments at HANNOVER MESSE 2010 can also be of practical benefit to the consumer. A fine example of this is the Nanoball, being presented at the stand of NanoBioNet.

Nanoball is actually a normal golf ball. But thanks its specially nano-optimized construction, its new dimple structure and its innovative nano-coating, it allows for a more precise game, according to the manufacturer. The golf ball's coating keeps it dry, preventing any unwanted weight imbalance which can result from water adhering to the surface. And the new Nanoball is also said to enhance the player's stroke as well as the ball's flight and rolling behavior, not to mention the putting precision. That's what we call high-tech for everyday life.
