More than just a temporary solution: Solar collectors in sandwich form

Sandwich-design solar mirrors that deliver concentrated solar energy are an unusual, yet effective solution. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, German company Feranova will be presenting a new type of collector that uses special mirror technology.

Patented by Feranova, this aluminum sandwich mirror stays strong in the face of storms, wind, harsh weather and the effects of salt in coastal areas. The collector can be installed without the need for an expensive substructure. The solar thermal power can be used for the desalination of seawater, solar cooling and thermal solar power plants.

Eagle-eyed robots

Robots are particularly effective when they have the ability to perceive their environment in a similar way to humans. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, the Technical University of Munich (TU München) is displaying robots that have "eyes" sharp enough to avoid obstacles, enabling them to reach their destination unaided.

The robots are fitted with two high-resolution cameras that photograph the surroundings and process the images in real time. The key feature is the sheer speed at which huge amounts of data can be analyzed. This enables the robot to "spot" obstacles in good time and to navigate its way around them with absolute precision.

Don't get into a spin - banishing oil and grease from our roads

Oil and grease spilled as a result of traffic accidents make main roads dangerously slippy. What's more, such conditions also pose a danger to the environment. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (TU Cottbus) is introducing a new cleaning agent for road surfaces.

The aim is to remove oil and grease as quickly as possible. This is achieved using specially developed additives that improve the breaking down and absorption of such harmful substances. The cleaning agents developed by TU Cottbus are highly effective and suitable for a range of different road surfaces.

Turn out the lights - get ready for the glowworms!

If the scientists at the Academy of Art and Design in Offenbach am Main have their way, gleaming glowworms and algae will soon be lighting our way through the darkness. At the special display "material TRENDS" in Hall 6 - part of HANNOVER MESSE 2010 - bioluminescence researchers will demonstrate how biological light from microorganisms can be designed and used.

Without any genetic manipulation, the scientists have managed to get the tiny worms and algae to glow through interaction alone - practically at the touch of a button. This marks a step towards bioluminescence and a step in the right direction. After all, these ultra-natural little lamps are in a class of their own in terms of energy efficiency.
Academy of Art and Design - Transfer Office, Hall 2, Stand C45

Nimble fingers - the new generation of flexible robot arms

Even with robots, time is money. With that in mind, the new Scara robots from Stäubli Robotics achieve impressively high speeds when carrying out packaging and assembly tasks. The company will be presenting this new generation of robots at HANNOVER MESSE 2010.

These robots are not just fast - they also work with great precision. That makes them suitable for applications in the fields of medical technology, pharmaceuticals, the food industry and electronics. Described by the manufacturer as slim and lightweight, these high-tech co-workers don't even take up a lot of space.
Stäubli Tec-Systems, Hall 17, Stand D04

Enjoy a pleasant flight thanks to cutting-edge technology

Lie back, relax, sip a glass of sparkling wine and gaze out at the fluffy white clouds. Air travel could be so enjoyable - if only you weren't scared of flying. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, the Fraunhofer Institute of Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF) will be revealing how flying is now becoming an even safer option.

If they are to feel completely comfortable during the flight, passengers have to have absolute trust not only in the skills of the pilot, but also in all the technology and materials used. The scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute are working on ways to identify fatigue or initial damage before it has a chance to develop into a real problem. This research is based on the science of adaptronics, one of the key technologies of the 21st century.

Hands-on ADONIS

Stalking through woods and fields, the spidery limbs of ALDURO make this gigantic robot ideal for use in the forestry industry, for example. However, weighing in at 1.8 tons, it really is quite a handful. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, the University of Duisburg-Essen is presenting ALDURO's little brother ADONIS. Weighing just 15 kg, this nifty chap demonstrates just what its big brother can do - in miniature.

ADONIS - or "ALDURO Demonstrator ADONIS" in full - is uncomplicated, easy to transport and ready for anything. It is the ideal partner for performing experiments and tests on various walking patterns and sensor technology that would be far too expensive and complicated with big brother ALDURO.
University of Duisburg-Essen (Hall 2, stand C38)

Electricity at every step

It's a fascinating concept. Generating electricity at every step - without even thinking about it. It may sound like an outlandish idea, but it's possible with the world's first "piezoelectric flooring" from Krause Parklett. The energy produced by simply walking over the floor is converted immediately into electricity. See for yourself at HANNOVER MESSE 2010!

The tiny piezo elements used to generate low-voltage electricity are hidden in the floor. Miniature batteries store the energy, which can be used, for example, to light stairs in the event of a power failure or to power small devices.
Krause Parklett, (Hall 13, stand E38)

Tracking tractors

Anyone who puts their heart and soul into farming often attaches great importance to their agricultural machinery. Those interested in the biographies of tractors or combine harvesters, for example, will be interested in what Mesonic Software GmbH has to offer at HANNOVER MESSE 2010.

Mesonic has joined forces with S&S Software und der Service GmbH to develop a vehicle and machinery administration system tailored to the requirements of the agricultural industry. It documents the service life of agricultural equipment and, for example, provides all the requisite information when the vehicle or machine changes hands.
Mesonic Software GmbH (Hall 17, stand D34).

Robots get their kicks in the factory

Only real tough guys get to play soccer in the factory hall! The palletizing robot PARO doesn't need to fear for his job and happily juggles with soccer balls during working hours - perhaps in anticipation of the upcoming Soccer World Cup! His employer - roTeg AG - doesn't seem to mind either, and is happy for the soccer-mad PARO to demonstrate his skills in public at HANNOVER MESSE 2010.

PARO shows off his finely-tuned coordination skills by using his pneumatic gripper to pick up soccer balls from a jet of air. However, he's not shy of hard work either.  This all-rounder also palletizes folded cartons with its sophisticated vacuum gripping technology.
roTeg AG (Hall 16, stand A10)

The right programming - a small forklift with a big impact

You first have to learn how to program a mini forklift before it transports the right loads to the right place. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, the University of Kaiserslautern demonstrates how best to design programming courses for these steel colleagues.

The mini forklifts are primarily used for education purposes. They are programmed to drive around obstacle courses, locate loads and transport them to a specified destination. They are programmed by schoolchildren and students with the aim of showing them how to work through a complex project - from initial planning and specification to the implementation of an entire system.
University of Kaiserslautern (Hall 2, stand C48)

Ensuring quality in any language

Quality assurance across borders. At HANNOVER MESSE 2010, Böhme & Weihs from Sprockhövel is presenting its linguistically-skilled, computer-aided quality assurance solution CASQ-it that fears neither borders nor foreign languages.

CASQ-it is already available in many languages. No matter whether the language in question is southern, eastern, western or central European, Baltic, Cyrillic or Asian, the system always displays the right character sets for user interfaces, catalogues and master data.
Böhme & Weihs (Hall 17, stand B66)
