CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, has announced that its 2011 congress will be held March 14-16, in Porto, Portugal, at the historical Freixo Palace Hotel, on the banks of the Douro River.
The Congress will be hosted by Associação de Ourivesaria e Relojoaria de Portugal - the Portuguese Jewellery and Watchmaking Association (AORP) - under the auspices of the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development - North Portugal (CCDRN).
Announcing the dates and venue of next annual congress, the CIBJO's president, Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, credited AORP's president, Manuel Alcino, and his staff for their supreme effort in creating the conditions necessary for the event to take place in the historic coastal city. Porto, which is most closely associated with the production of port wine, also boasts a centuries-old jewellery making tradition.
"We are grateful to the AORP and the CCDRN for the hosting and sponsoring of the 2011 CIBJO Congress," Cavalieri stated. "Jewellery has played a key role in Porto's history and culture and Portugal's jewellery industry continues to be concentrated in this fascinating city."
AORP President Manuel Alcino said he expected the CIBJO congress to help highlight both the Portugal's contemporary jewellery industry as well as its centuries-old heritage of jewellery making. "Porto is very much a hidden gem. Furthermore, since the 2011 CIBJO Congress will immediately precede the 2011 Gondomar Jewellery Fair - Ourindústriain Gondomar/Porto, we will be able to provide participants with a close up view of our young and upcoming Portuguese jewellery designers, as well as our established and internationally renowned jewellery manufacturers," he stated.
As is traditionally the case at CIBJO Congresses, representatives of the international jewellery community will be gathering in Porto with a very full agenda. A CIBJO Congress serves as the official forum for CIBJO's various sectoral commissions, and is the venue at which amendments can be introduced to the organization's definitive directories of international industry standards for diamonds,. coloured stone, pearl, gem labs and precious metals, known as the Blue Books.
In recent years, CIBJO Congresses have served as milestones in the jewellery business quest for an industry-wide programme for Corporate Social Responsibility, and in this respect is the place at which the on the programme of World Jewellery Confederation Education Foundation (WJCEF) and the CIBJO's ongoing cooperation with the United Nations is reported upon..
A dedicated website for the 2011 CIBJO Congress will be launched in January. It will provide full information about the congress agenda and enable online registration.
CIBJO is the international jewellery confederation of national trade organizations. CIBJO's purpose is to encourage harmonization, promote international cooperation in the jewellery industry and to consider issues which concern the trade worldwide. CIBJO's chief mission is to protect consumer confidence in the industry.
