Mattia Vita continues his learning curve on Rally Adriatico

08.05.2019: Up-and-coming Italian star Mattia Vita has continued to make progress towards his goal of competing in the World Rally Championship next year with a fourth place finish in

Up-and-coming Italian star Mattia Vita has continued to make progress towards his goal of competing in the World Rally Championship next year with a fourth place finish in class on the Rally Adriatico in Italy – despite a steering problem that ruled him out of the fight for victory.

Mattia is competing on the Italian Junior Rally Championship this year against an expert field of Ford Fiesta R2B drivers, all fighting for the top prize of a scholarship towards the Junior WRC next year – which has produced champions such as Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier.

Mattia’s chances were severely compromised on the opening loop of the rally, when a slight contact broke a shock absorber and the power steering. Up until then he had been a contender for class victory, setting a fastest stage time on the demanding gravel event based close to the city of Ancona.

Although Mattia managed to get his car back to service, the problem couldn’t be resolved completely, and he remained handicapped for the rest of the rally. Despite this issue, he kept his head and drove the car sensibly through the remaining stages to achieve what was possible under the circumstances: fourth place, also thanks to an excellent performance from co-driver Massimiliano Bosi during all 11 stages.

Following his podium at the first round of the season – the famous Sanremo Rally – fourth place on the Adriatico means that Mattia retains third in the championship, with five points-scoring opportunities remaining. The goal of competing on the world stage next year remains within touching distance.

Mattia said: “I’m my own harshest critic, so after we had the problem in the morning, I was initially very disappointed. I made a small mistake that had bigger consequences, which I think was just down to not having enough time in the car before the start of the event. But looking at the rally as a whole, I think now it was not so bad. The main thing is that I got more experience of gravel, which I had never sampled before in this car, and scored a fastest stage time. This shows that the potential is there; we just need to string it together.

To be where we are now in the championship gives us something to work with, and we’ll be working very hard on improving before the next round in Sardinia. I’d like to thank my co-driver Max for a fantastic job, ACI Team Italia for their support, and most importantly of all, my sponsors whose vital contribution is very much appreciated.”

That next round of the Italian Junior Championship is run alongside the World Championship’s Rally d’Italia Sardegna, so it gives Mattia the chance to directly compare his stage times to those of the drivers currently on the Junior WRC that compete in the same turbo-powered Fiestas. There's the added bonus of Rally d'Italia Sardegna counting for double points on the Italian series, so it will be an important weekend of big opportunities.

Before then, Mattia will concentrate on some gravel testing – which he has never done before with this car – and he will also take part in some karting events, as alongside his rally career he is a factory driver for the PCR karting team.
