27/10/07 - Barcelona Qualifying
On a drying track, Fabrice Walfisch has taken his fifth pole position of the season. The Team Lompech Sport driver will line up alongside Dimitri Enjalbert (Tech 1 Racing) on the grid for race one. The other pole position goes to comeback specialist Renaud Kuppens (Boutsen Energy Racing). Walfisch will also be starting from the front row for race two.
With the track still damp, most drivers opted to stay in the pits at the start of the first session. Ludovic Badey (TDS) set the time to beat ahead of Mike Verschuur, Matthieu Cheruy and Bernhard Ten Brinke.
With just a few minutes gone, the yellow flags were being waved to signal an incident involving Wim Coekelbergs (Racing for Belgium), who is back behind the wheel of one of his Mégane Trophies this weekend.
In the closing minutes of the opening session, everyone then came out on track at once to try and get a few laps in. At the chequered flag, Dimitri Enjalbert had provisional pole (2'09''093) ahead of Pedro Petiz, Fabrice Walfisch (Team Lompech Sport), Greg Franchi (Equipe Verschuur) and Ludovic Badey.
All the teams took advantage of the five-minute break to switch to slicks. Once the second fifteen-minute session got underway, the times started to drop dramatically with each driver who crossed the line.
With five minutes to go, Petiz was leading with a lap in 2'00''278. He was followed by Enjalbert, Meichtry (Race Performance), Kuppens (Boutsen Energy Racing) and Ciro (Oregon Team).
With just four minutes left Petiz then smashed through the 1'59'' barrier. The Tech 1 boys seem to be right on top form under such conditions with Lahaye and Enjalbert provisionally holding onto 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
With 2'30'' of the session remaining, Matthieu Lahaye then went faster than 1'57''. The fight for pole position was clearly going to go right to the chequered flag. As the first driver to cross the line, Enjalbert moved to the head of proceedings with a lap in 1'55''757. Pedro Petiz did not manage to improve on the fastest time, unlike Fabrice Walfisch and Matthieu Lahaye who both managed to secure starts from row one.
Enjalbert and Petiz were followed by Kuppens, Meichtry, Dhouailly, Martin, Ciro and Franchi.
Renaud Kuppens will be able to take some consolation from his pole position in race 2 ahead of Walfisch, Lahaye, Petiz, Meichtry, Enjalbert, Ciro, Dhouailly, Martin and Verschuur.
