20/10/07 - Estoril Race 1
With his fourth race win of the season, Pedro Petiz (Tech 1 Racing) not only delighted the Portuguese crowd here today, but also moved one step closer to securing the championship title. Maxime Martin (Boutsen Energy Racing), who started from pole, finished third, while Bernhard Ten Brinke (Equipe Verschuur) took second place, his best result in Eurocup Mégane Trophy.
Maxime Martin got off to the best start and went into the first bend in the lead, closely followed by Pedro Petiz, who had quickly moved past Mike Verschuur. The first bend was the scene of a collision that forced Matthieu Lahaye (Tech 1 Racing) to abandon and cost Ralph Meichtry (Race Performance) a good ten seconds.
At the end of lap 1, Martin and Petiz led from Sébastien Dhouailly (Tech 1 Racing) and Michaël Rossi (Racing for Belgium). Rossi was then passed on lap 2 by Fabrice Walfisch (Team Lompech Sport), and soon found himself under pressure from César Campaniço (Equipe Verschuur).
On the following lap, Walfisch snatched third position from Dhouailly, who was subsequently overtaken by Rossi and Campaniço. The rampant Walfisch stayed right on Petiz's tail and waited for his opportunity. It wasn't long in coming, and he soon moved up into second Meanwhile, Dhouailly dropped back a further two places, as Campaniço and Enjalbert moved up the field.
After 13 minutes, Ralph Meichtry pulled into the pits, his race over On the next lap, Petiz, Campaniço, Verschuur and Badey were the first drivers to refuel.
Meanwhile, Walfisch and Rossi gained ground on Martin, Walfisch eventually taking the lead at the start of lap 11. Rossi, in contrast, was unable to find a way past and opted to make his pit stop, Enjalbert inheriting third place.
Enjalbert and Scheier filled up at the halfway point, allowing Bernhard Ten Brinke (Equipe Verschuur) to move into the top three.
The leaders waited until laps 14 (Ten Brinke) and 15 (Walfisch, Martin and Petiz) to come into the pits. Once again, Tech 1 Racing's mechanics showed their superiority, enabling Petiz to take the lead, ahead of Ten Brinke, Martin, Enjalbert, Campaniço, Walfisch, Verschuur, Rossi, Dhouailly and Scheier.
As Petiz moved inexorably towards his fourth race win of the season, a dose of drama was injected into the closing moments of the race by a battle between Enjalbert, Campaniço, Walfisch and Verschuur. On the penultimate lap, Campaniço delighted the crowd by taking fourth place from Enjalbert. Walfisch, meanwhile, lost ground and could only sit and watch with admiration as Verschuur launched repeated assaults on the Tech 1 driver, who ultimately held firm.
Right up to the final bend, Maxime Martin kept trying to get the better of Bernhard Ten Brinke. But the Dutchman clung on to his second place!
Pedro Petiz: «It's a terrific moment to win here. I'd like to thank the team, who did a great job once again. But for my penalty at Magny-Cours, I'd already be champion I'm going to try and put in another solid performance tomorrow and win the title on home soil.»
Bernhard Ten Brinke: «I can't describe the way I'm feeling I started in eleventh place, but the team has put a really good car together and the refuelling stop was perfect. It's my second time on the podium this year.»
Maxime Martin: «I got off to a good start, but I couldn't hold Fabrice off. I attacked from start to finish, trying to move up the field. A podium finish is a good result in the context of the championship standings, as it brings me closer to Ralph Meichtry.»
