Golf icon Arnold Palmer immortalized in LeRoy Neiman painting

Athletes often enjoy a measure of celebrity status and adulation afforded few others. But even the greatest athletes have their detractors, skeptics who wish they would not always win.

Such critics would be hard to find in the case of golf legend Arnold Palmer, one of the most universally beloved athletes of the last century who enjoyed almost unmatched admiration and support.

The first player to be almost unanimously accepted as the greatest player ever to play the game, Palmer, known to golf fans around the world as “The King,” won 62 PGA Tour titles during a career that spanned from 1955 to 1973 – a total that at the time placed him behind only Sam Snead and Ben Hogan and still ranks Palmer fifth on the tour’s all-time list of victories.

He won seven major championships, tied for second in three more majors, and is credited, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, for helping popularize the sport.

Palmer’s modest upbringing and small-town mannerisms, stemming from his upbringing in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, are thought to be among the reasons for his enormous popularity and his ability to help reduce the impression that golf was a game reserved for the wealthy elite.

Golf fans and shrewd collectors everywhere will have an opportunity to acquire a trio of Palmer-related items later this month at Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night Sports Collectibles Catalog Auction Feb. 25-26.

The world’s leading auctioneer of sports collectibles, Heritage will merge two icons of the athletic world with the offer of a 1974 painting of Palmer by the legendary LeRoy Neiman (est. $100,000).

Painted in the same year during which the World Golf Hall of Fame welcomed Palmer as one of 13 members of its inaugural class, the man widely viewed as the world’s premier sports artist captured Palmer in the colorful kaleidoscopic style that is as identifiable as any in the art world.

The image, which measures 13-1/2 inches wide by 23-1/2 inches high, also was used as cover art for the April 1974 edition of Golf Digest magazine and is signed by Neiman in the lower right corner.

One of the iconic showdowns in the history of golf took place the 1958 Masters, when Palmer entered the final round tied with the legendary Sam Snead.

In the first tournament to offer its winner a five-figure purse, Palmer was able to pull away from Snead and hold off challenges from a slew of other players trying to climb the leaderboard to win his first green jacket, awarded to the event’s winner each year.

The event also made famous the 1958 Arnold Palmer Masters Tournament-Worn and Signed Golf Shoes (est. $15,000). The event marked Palmer’s first major championship, and his first of Masters titles that he would win over a span of seven years.

He gave his black and white wingtip Footjoy shoes to his personal pilot in the 1960s, who passed them down to his son, who later confirmed that the shoes were, in fact, the same ones he wore at the 1958 Masters.

The shoes’ owner and Palmer met up in 2004, at which point Palmer signed the shoes with a permanent marker, adding “1958 Masters” under his signature on each shoe and posed for photos with the owner and the shoes.

Golfers earn their biggest purses in the tournaments that are referred to as “the majors” – the Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship (a.k.a. The British Open) and the PGA Championship – as well as in some heavily sponsored independent tournaments.

But make no mistake: the Ryder Cup, a friendly tournament between teams of professional players from the United States and Europe, is viewed as an enormously important event that offers two years of bragging rights for the victors.

A signed 1995 poster depicts all of the U.S. captains since 1927 (est. $4,000), making it essentially a Mount Rushmore of American golf, contains the signatures of every captain in attendance.

Joining Palmer at the gathering of the nation’s golf royalty were Lanny Wadkins, Snead, Jack Burke, Jr., Byron Nelson, Jay Hebert, Dow Finsterwald, Billy Casper, Dave Marr, Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Dave Stockton and Tom Watson. One of only about 38 made, this poster measures 24 by 30 inches in its frame, and is a must-have for savvy collectors and golf fans alike.
