The threat of global climate change is forcing industries of all kinds to refocus on energy and resource efficiency as matters of strategic importance. These issues are already shaping up to be keynote themes at LIGNA HANNOVER, the world's leading fair for the woodworking and wood processing industries, which next runs from 18 to 22 May 2009.

Our planet's natural resources are finite and steadily dwindling, and its atmosphere and biosphere can only take so much pollution. The world's companies must therefore improve their resource efficiency - as a matter of common sense, sound ethics and ecological awareness if not cost-consciousness. The wood production chain is responding by shifting the focus of its technological development to nature and resource conservation.

On the raw materials side, this involves maintaining a secure supply of timber and conserving resources through sustainable forestry. Further along the chain, it means that woodworking and processing companies are using wood more efficiently, while manufacturers of wood processing machinery are adopting more energy- and time-efficient processes.

One strategy that will benefit both the economy and the environment revolves primarily around maximizing resource productivity so as to make the most efficient use possible of raw materials and energy. This necessitates intelligent, integrated production system design.

The waste material and waste heat from one process can be put to good use in other production processes. Exhibitors at LIGNA HANNOVER are taking on the resource efficiency challenge by offering novel products and process refinements capable of lowering environmental impact.

The theme of resource efficiency is central to all display categories at LIGNA HANNOVER: forestry and forestry technology, sawmill technology, solid wood working, wood materials and veneer production, the furniture industry, surface finishing technology, special displays and the "Handwerk, Holz & mehr" (woodworking trades) section. And it's obviously a theme that's close to the hearts of the exhibitors who have signed up for LIGNA HANNOVER 2009.

The promotional literature for the event was sent out back in November 2007 - earlier than for past events - and the registrations have been flooding in right from the start.

This is not surprising given that, in their exit surveys after LIGNA 2007, a massive 83% of the exhibiting companies signaled a clear intention to participate in the 2009 event. Many of these enterprises are benefiting from the early-bird discount, which gives a reduction on the basic display stand rental to exhibitors who book by 31 May 2008.

LIGNA HANNOVER is the leading international fair for the forestry and wood industries. LIGNA 2007 occupied 148,800 sqm (over 1,601,600 sq. ft) of net display space and fielded 1,832 exhibitors, of whom more than half came from beyond Germany.

The event was used as a relationship maintenance and business platform by 107,279 visitors, including 45,800 from beyond Germany. "Handwerk, Holz & mehr", the fair-within-a-fair dedicated to products and solutions for the skilled woodworking trades, also recorded increased exhibitor and visitor numbers.
