Motorsport UK to vote for FIA for Members at the 2021 FIA Presidential Elections

05.12.2021: Motorsport UK, the officially recognised Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) national ASN for motorsport in the UK, has confirmed its support for Mohammed ben Sulayem’s bi

Motorsport UK, the officially recognised Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) national ASN for motorsport in the UK, has confirmed its support for Mohammed ben Sulayem’s bid for the FIA Presidency and his team of FIA for Members. As the representative body for motorsport in the UK with 720 clubs and over 65,000 members this adds real substance to the ASN’s official vote on 17 December 2021.

In a video interview, David Richards, Chair of Motorsport UK, outlined the ASN’s commitment to the FIA for Members candidate team, that includes Tim Shearman as Deputy President for Mobility and Great Britain’s former World Rally Champion, Robert Reid, as Deputy President for Sport.

Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, Ben Cussons, joined Richards to add the RAC’s support to ben Sulayem and FIA for Members.

An interview with Motorsport UK Chair, David Richards, and Royal Automobile Club Chairman, Ben Cussons, on the upcoming FIA Presidential Elections

David Richards, commente
d, “As the FIA’s officially recognised representative for motorsport in the United Kingdom, I can confirm that Motorsport UK is supporting Mohammed ben Sulayem and his FIA for Members bid for the Presidency of our governing body, the FIA.”

“Over the last few months, we’ve undertaken an extensive period of consultation with our members, in order to properly assess the manifestos of both candidates. We then hosted both teams at the Royal Automobile Club in London where we filmed proceedings so that all our members could see the debate and discussion. We had a lively session of questioning with both teams but were then requested by Graham Stoker not to release the recording of the FIA for All session to anyone.”

“In our view this refusal created a lack of transparency in the process which gave our Board considerable cause for concern, but this was not the only reason for our ultimate decision.”

“Our decision to support FIA for Members and Mohammed ben Sulayem is formed on the belief that motorsport is going through a period of significant challenge and change. This requires dynamic and imaginative leadership that looks to the future and is prepared to be transparent and accountable to its members, embracing the democratic processes one expects to see in a modern sport governing body.”

“At the FIA Presidential Elections on 17 December, Motorsport UK will therefore vote for FIA for Members and Mohammed ben Sulayem.”

The Chairman of the RAC, Ben Cussons added,
“After detailed and careful evaluation of both candidate manifestos, the Royal Automobile Club are delighted to endorse FIA for Members led by Mohammed ben Sulayem. Mobility faces huge challenges as we move forward and their approach offers an open and transparent leadership of the FIA that will benefit all members whilst ensuring a fresh and energetic review of FIA principles.”

These endorsements were welcomed by ben Sulayem and FIA for Members, who commented,
“This is an honour as well as welcome recognition for all the work we have put into this campaign. To be endorsed by two such august clubs, from a country that is regarded by many as the home of motorsport, is truly humbling as well as energising. My team and I are grateful and if elected, we will always consider the support and advice of the RAC and Motorsport UK a valuable and essential addition to our evolutionary plans for the future.”

Robert Reid added,
“As a British World Champion rally driver I could not be prouder to know that the UK Member clubs have come out in support of our FIA for Members election campaign.  I have motorsport at heart and to know that the RAC and Motorsport UK are with us in this election is a unique and special experience.”

Motorsport UK is the national governing body of motor sport in the UK, it is a member of the Federation International de l’Automobile, (FIA).

The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) is also a member of the FIA representing the mobility interests in the UK and was one of the founding members of the FIA in 1904.

The FIA is the world governing body of motorsport and motoring comprised of 245 motoring and motor sport club members in 146 countries. The FIA is in a unique position to facilitate communication and the exchange of ideas among its 80 million members and represent the interests of these members with governments and in society at large.

The President of the FIA has wide-reaching executive powers and thus holds a critical position in the leadership of motorsport and motoring worldwide. The FIA statutes give a limit of three terms of four years. The incumbent, Jean Todt, has now reached this limit and triggered the need for a new President to be elected in December 2021.
There are two proposed candidate teams with supplied manifestos:

FIA for Members:

Presidential candidate: Mohammed ben Sulayem
Deputy President for Mobility: Tim Shearman
Deputy President for Sport: Robert Reid
FIA for Members Your Manifesto for the Future

FIA for All:

Presidential candidate: Graham Stoker
Deputy President for Mobility: Thierry Willemarck
Deputy President for Sport: Tom Kristensen
FIA for All Motorsport Motor Sport manifesto
FIA for All Mobility Mobility for All

The approach of Motorsport UK and the RAC

As closely aligned member organisations, it is deemed essential by each respective board to examine the requirements and views of the members across the sport and mobility landscape. This has been conducted in a completely transparent manner, with a publicly visible consultation to allow each team to present their manifesto and introduce the representatives of their teams.

Each respective board sought the counsel of its members through the committee structure based on the published manifestos of each team. The subjects were debated at board level and then aggregated into a set of questions covering all of the key aspects of the manifestos and the challenges facing the future of the sport.

Both candidate teams were invited to attend a session at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall in London on the 18 and 19 of October.

Representatives from the boards of the RAC and Motorsport UK were present and led by their respective chairs, Ben Cussons and David Richards, they spent two hours with each team examining the manifestos.

The output from these meetings formed the position of the boards on the allocation of their votes in December. The purpose of filming the sessions was to allow members to observe the responses of the candidate teams and provide feedback to the boards ahead of crucial meetings at the end of November.

The recording of the session with FIA for Members is also available from this link on the RAC website.
(Note: unfortunately, Motorsport UK and the RAC were instructed by FIA for All, the second candidate team, not to release the recording of the similar Q&A session with them).

We welcome any feedback from our members directly to the RAC and Motorsport UK:
