Watkins Glen International announced that the Governor of New York State, David A. Paterson, will be the Honorary Starter for this year’s Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen on Sunday, July 6. The Governor is scheduled to wave the green flag to officially start the 60-lap event at 1:20 PM. The Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen is one of only five IndyCar Series races to be broadcast live on ABC in 2009.
“It is an honor to serve as the Honorary Starter for this year’s Camping World Grand Prix and a great way for so many New Yorkers, including myself, to celebrate this holiday weekend,” said Governor Paterson. “Watkins Glen International offers so many fun filled activities for New York’s families and tourists. I hope that all New Yorkers consider taking advantage of the 2009 season at Watkins Glen International.”
“I’d like to thank the Governor for joining us during this weekend’s race,” stated Michael Printup, president of Watkins Glen International. “This is the only stop in the state for the IndyCar Series, and we are proud to host him as our guest.”
The Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen will mark the Governor’s first visit to Watkins Glen International. Governor Paterson became the 55th Governor of New York State on March 17, 2008, after stepping up from his role as the Lieutenant Governor.
The Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen over Independence Day weekend, July 3-5, will mark the IndyCar Series 5th annual visit to Watkins Glen International. In addition to great racing from the IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights, SCCA Speed World Challenge and the F2000 Championship Series, the weekend will be filled with countless activities and family fun events. On Friday night, fans can watch a fireworks display at the track, or they can travel into the village of Watkins Glen for the Indy-Pendence Celebration at Clute Park, which will feature fireworks over Seneca Lake.
On Saturday afternoon, fans are invited to attend the all-driver IndyCar Series autograph session. Then on Saturday night, fans can watch the Presidents of The United States of America live in concert on the Red Cat Summer Stage. Meanwhile, a Viewing Party will be going on in the FrontStretch Grandstand where fans can watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Daytona International Speedway. The evening will close with a huge fireworks spectacular at The Glen.
Tickets for the entire 2009 season at Watkins Glen International are on sale now! Celebrate the Fourth of July with the 5th Annual Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen weekend, July 3-5. On-track action will be headlined by the IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights, F2000 Championship Series and the SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Weekend tickets begin at just $55, and general admission for kids 12 and under is FREE when accompanied by an adult.
