The National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) held a joint press conference as part of a public awareness campaign concerning the enforcement of Federal Land Transport Law No. 9.
During the conference the NTA and ATCUAE emphasized the importance of having a UAE acceptable and valid international driving license and cautioned against the use of unofficial international driving licences that may create non-compliance with the law for those driving rental cars or private vehicles abroad, making their insurance invalid in the event of accidents.
H.E Dr. Nasser Saif Al Mansoori, Director General of the NTA, and ATCUAE President H.E Dr Mohammed Ben Sulayem, stated that the two organizations will collaborate on the enforcement of the Land Transport Law and agreed that further joint public awareness initiative to to be held regarding regulations laid down by UAE Federal Land Transport Law No. (9) of 2011.
New official International Driving Permits (IDPs) are now available from the ATCUAE with their new and more recognisable official logos of both the Club and the NTA, distinguishing them from unauthorised versions still finding their way into the market.
NTA Director General Dr. Al Mansoori said: “The NTA is working with the ATCUAE to simplify procedures and provide the best of services to UAE travellers driving overseas. Furthermore, he stated that “People intending to drive a rental car or private vehicle when they’re abroad must be aware that using an unofficial international driving licence means that, in the event of an accident, their insurance becomes invalid.”
ATCUAE President Dr Ben Sulayem said: “We’re very happy to support the NTA in this new initiative. It’s another important step forward and we will continue to work together to safeguard the interests of our motoring tourists.”
The Press Confernce was also attended by HE Eng Abdualla Al Katheeri , Executive Director of Land Transport Sector, and Mr. Maher Badri, Chief Executive Officer of Automobile Touring Club of the UAE.
Costing AED150, official IDPs are available from ATCUAE offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Sharjah, from Emirates Post Offices across the country, from the offices of the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, and a number of other ATCUAE agents. All outlets are listed in the mobility and travel section at http://www.atcuae.ae
Those applying for an IDP require a copy of a valid UAE driving licence, passport copy with a valid residence visa in the case of expatriates, and two passport size photographs.
International Driving Permits (IDPs)
The UN introduced official International Driving Permits in 1949 to overcome difficulties faced by motorists travelling in foreign countries in view of widely varying drivers licence requirements.
While many countries allow visitors to use their domestic driving licences when travelling abroad, this can lead to variances in practices and lack of awareness and understanding of the country’s legislation and regulations , the new International Driving Permit ensures improved and better understanding of the requirements..
In addition to ensuring that insurance cover taken out is valid, it is a proof that the holder has a valid driving licence in their own country.
It is also printed in many languages, including Arabic. This helps overcome potential language barriers between drivers and police, while the document can also be a useful form of identification in the event of a lost passport.
Carnet de Passage en Douane (CDPs)
The significance of official CPD - commonly known as carnets or trip tickets - is that they guarantee the payment of any customs duties and import taxes chargeable in the event that vehicles are not re-exported.
Two globally recognised associations, the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) and the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), represented by the ATCUAE in the Emirates, play a major role in the international application of the CPD system.
Together they comprise some 210 affiliated clubs and associations in 120 countries around the world and share the primary objective of encouraging the development of international travel and tourism.
The UAE joined these countries in 2007 by signing the United Nations (UN) Customs Conventions of 1949, 1956 and 1968 which were introduced to allow the smooth flow of travel and tourism based on the CPD system.
