BMA has three cras in the top 10

After having become the youngest winner of a BRC round at the end of September, and having finished second in the Rally of Wallonia last week on Saturday evening, in an impressive manner, Grégoire Munster (Hyundai i20 R5) won the Sezoens Rally. Together with his co-driver Louis Louka he held the lead from start to finish.

On the other hand, in the Juniors his younger brother Charles Munster (Opel Corsa Rally4) dominated, winning all sixteen of the special stages, and finishing in a worthy ninth place overall and second place in the Stellantis Cup. Henri Schmelcher (Hyundai i20 R5) finished two places higher in seventh spot. With three cars in the top 10 BMA can look back on a highly successful weekend.

As from the opening stage Grégoire Munster promptly showed his hand, produced the fastest time and grabbed the lead. After the first loop of five stages his advantage was 1.6 sec. Halfway through the rally he increased the gap to 5.2 sec. At the start of the third loop of four stages Munster-Louka were somewhat too cautious, lost 5 sec to remain in the lead by a mere 0.2 sec.

The duo promptly reacted putting in three successive fastest times and increasing the gap to 9.7 sec. In the fourth run on Gerdingen Munster made a rare mistake. He went straight on, stalled the engine with a 10-sec time loss as outcome. With a 2.2 sec advantage over his nearest rival and 2.5 sec on the second one and still three special stages to go it was a question of starting from scratch. Munster did not allow himself to be taken off track, won the two following stages to tackle the final stage with a comfortable lead.

“Jeez, such a stupid mistake should never have happened. I missed a braking point, went straight on after which the engine stalled”, Grégoire Munster commented. “It always takes a moment before the engine restarts, but this time around it seemed to take an age. Once back on the road we just tried to refocus. There’s no point in trying to make up lost time because it never works.

In the following stages we regrouped to finally win the rally. I can’t find the words. It’s our second victory in three rallies. I wish to dedicate this victory to the team. It’s my way of thanking them for their hard work after my small mistake on Thursday. They worked throughout the night of Thursday on Friday to get the car ready for the scrutineering on Friday.”

After fourth place in the Omloop van Vlaanderen, victory in the East Belgian Rally, and second place in the Rally of Wallonia Munster now wins the Sezoens Rally. In the BRC intermediate rankings he now moves up into second place, four points down on the leader.

Similar to his brother Charles Munster can look back on a successful rally. In the Juniors the Munster-Pascaud duo won all sixteen of the special stages, finished ninth overall to finish second in the Stellantis Cup Belux, a mere 5.5 sec down on the winner.

“Apart from a problem with the intercom at the start and a few minor mistakes I’m satisfied about my performance in the rally. We win in the Juniors, and in the Stellantis Cup I miss out victory by 5.5 sec. That’s the only downside of the day. Had we also been able to win that category then we could have said that it was a perfect result, whereas now it’s a good result. In the intermediate ranking of the Stellantis Cup we remain in the lead.”

Similar to last week Henri Schmelcher was back in action again this week. And once again together with his co-driver Katleen Ombelet put in a strong race which he crowned with a seventh place. “Apart from the first two stages I had a good race”, Henri Schmelcher stated.

“This morning I made the wrong tyre choice. During the second SS I missed a chicane after which the engine stalled, and it took half a minute before the engine restarted. During the servicing, I opted for another choice of tyres after which everything went smoother. As from that moment I started to enjoy myself.

To be able to drive such a car on gravel is fabulous. The car has enormous potential, which Grégoire proved by winning the event. We have the same car, but the difference in driver is beyond description. I’m delighted for him and somewhat proud of my seventh place. In fact, Katleen is the first female competitor. It was a great day. Now waiting for the Condroz.”
