Grand Prix of Ukraine – July 20-21

- Thani Al-Qamzi qualifies in seventh for Team Abu Dhabi; Pole position for Sami Selio

- Rashid Al-Romaithi qualifies eighth; Rashid Al-Qamzi finishes fifth in F-4S

Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al-Qamzi will start Saturday afternoon’s Grand Prix of Ukraine from seventh position after a thrilling qualifying session on the Kiev Sea course on Friday afternoon. But team-mate and championship leader Ahmed Al-Hameli will face a race against time to be ready for action after flipping his boat near the end of the Q3 session.

Al-Hameli, bidding to defend an eight-point lead in the 2012 UIM F1 H20 World Championship, swapped lap times with his Qatar Team rivals Alex Carella and Shaun Torrente throughout the day and was faced with having to beat Sami Selio’s time of 51.88s to secure pole position.

But he flipped his boat at high-speed and will now start behind his main rivals on Saturday. Al-Qamzi was not able to post a top three time and will start Saturday’s race from seventh position, with former World Champion Selio on pole and the Qatar boats in second and third.

Team Abu Dhabi runs under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) with support from the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA). Salem Al-Romaithi acts as the team head and works alongside team manager Scott Gillman, with the team running under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. Etihad Airways is the official carrier for Team Abu Dhabi.

Qualifying

Only two of the 17 boats would be eliminated in Q1 and Al-Hameli all but confirmed his place in Q2 with a stunning early lap of 53.88s. Al-Qamzi slotted into fifth behind his team-mate, the two Qatar boats and Finland’s Sami Selio and the Team Abu Dhabi pair finished Q1 in the same positions. Brett Stuart and Rinaldo Osculati were eliminated.

Five of the surviving 15 boats would disappear after Q2. Al-Hameli posted his intentions from the outset with a potent lap of 54.39s to storm to the top of the leader board and virtually assure his place in Q3. Al-Qamzi also confirmed his place in Q3 in eighth, but Ivan Brigada, Filip Roms, Marit Stromoy, Duarte Benavente and Jonas Andersson were all elminated.

Italy’s Francesco Cantando posted the early target time of 55 seconds but Al-Qamzi was not able to sneak inside the Italian’s time and posted a 55.58s lap. Kuwaiti Yousef Al-Rubayan moved into the provisional pole with a second lap of 53.83s, as six drivers waited to take part in the shoot-out.

Phillipe Chiappe and Stanislav Kourtsenovsky were not able to make in-roads into Al-Rubayan’s time, but Sami Selio produced a stunning lap of 51.88s to secure provisional pole with just three drivers still to run. Torrente and Carella were not able to match the Finn and Al-Hameli’s accident put paid to his chances of claiming pole.

Al-Hameli and Al-Qamzi set the second and sixth quickest times in the morning’s free practice session, with the serie leader clocking a best lap of 49.11s during his 29 laps of the course. Al-Qamzi recorded a 49.75s tour in a session that was won by Tatarstan pole winner Shaun Torrente of the Qatar Team.

F-4S

Rashid Al-Romaithi and Rashid Al-Qamzi were set to share F-4S responsibilities and Al-Romaithi was given the nod for the first practice session. The Emirati ran for 14 laps and set a quickest time of 52.64s, with England’s Matthew Palfreyman posting the target lap of 47.49s during his 10-lap stint.

Eight drivers were involved in the session and headed straight into the 20-minute time trials to determine the starting order for the first of the weekend’s two races. Palfreyman was again the form driver and claimed pole position with a lap of 47.25s, with Al-Romaithi qualifying in eighth place.

Rashed Al-Qamzi replaced Al-Romaithi for the race, where Palfreyman led the eight boats on to the course. The Briton held a 3.07s lead through lap four and Al-Qamzi moved into seventh position, sandwiched between Qatar’s Khalid Abdullah Al-Kuwari and Norwegian rookie Jan Andre Landsnes.

A yellow flag was raised on the ninth lap after an incident involving Thomas Munthe-Kaas, although Palfreyman maintained his lead from Forss and Xiong Ziwei and Al-Qamzi climbed to sixth.

The green flag was raised on lap 13 and Palfreyman maintained his lead over Forss and Al-Qamzi retained sixth, but the Swede managed to find a way passed the Briton on the next lap and began to pull clear of the struggling Englishman. Al-Qamzi retained sixth and moved up to fifth near the end, as Forss confirmed the win and reduced Palfreyman’s championship lead to 15 points.

Teams are permitted further practice on Saturday morning, before the second of the F-4S races starts at 17.00hrs (UAE time) and the 2012 Grand Prix of Ukraine roars into life at 19.00hrs (UAE time).
