21.10.2012: Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) did it: he is the tenth champion in history of the Formula 3 Euro

Daniel Juncadella (Prema Powerteam) did it: he is the tenth champion in history of the Formula 3 Euro Series and is now following in the footsteps of Formula 1 stars Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hülkenberg or DTM stars like Edoardo Mortara, Jamie Green and Roberto Merhi. Moreover, the 21-year old Spaniard has also won the world’s two most important one-off Formula 3 events at Macau and Zandvoort.

Juncadella had a successful start into his third Formula 3 season, wining two races during the season opener at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg in April and going home as the leader in the drivers’ standings. In spite of some setbacks in the course of the season, he wasn’t sidetracked from his road to success and now got the reward for his efforts with the championship crown.

For the Prema Powerteam, for which Juncadella has been racing since joining the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2010, it is the third drivers’ title in this championship. Previously, Australian Ryan Briscoe (2003) and Juncadella’s compatriot Roberto Merhi (2011) had given the Italian team reason to celebrate. Juncadella had already proven his qualities with third place in the 2011 Formula 3 Euro Series and victories in the Macau Grand Prix (2011) and the Masters of Formula 3 (2012).

The drivers’ standings reveal that Juncadella currently is one of the best Formula 3 drivers. In 2012, he won five races and scored five more podium finishes. In spite of all his achievements, the Iberian is self-critical: “One should never forget: at the end of the day, we are all human beings rather than machines.

I don’t want to force my way through the ranks of all the different single-seater categories and only leave scorched earth behind, just to make it into Formula 1 as quickly as possible. Still being able to look into the mirror and be at terms with myself is much more important.”

For instance, he dedicated his victory in the Formula 3 Masters at Zandvoort to his compatriot Maria de Villotta, who had had a severe crash while testing a Formula 1 car a few days earlier: “Maria has helped me a lot, especially in the early days of my career, I owe her very much. At nice moments, one should also think of those who are not currently having such a good time.”

Juncadella has also shown his abilities off the race track. Well aware that a career as a professional racing driver will end one day, he started studying business administration having passed his A-levels. “Doing something for your brain and being prepared for a life after motorsport is important, too.”

He has been learning German for over a year, his fourth foreign language after English, Italian and French. He is learning together with a private German teacher for three to four hours each week. When he then still has some time left, the sports afficionado likes to play golf or padel, a racket-and-ball game derived from tennis that is very popular in Spain. “Especially golf is good for your ability to concentrate and, just like padel, is great fun,” the 21-year old says.

The Formula 3 stalwart is keeping his options open for his future in motorsport. “First of all, I fully wanted to concentrate on the battle for the title. Now, the Macau Grand Prix is still on, an event I really would like to win for the second time. Next season, both graduating into the GP2 series and changing into the DTM would be possible for me.”
