2013 UIM CLASS ONE WORLD POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP
Turkish Grand Prix, June 14-16

-  Victory 3’s Al-Zafeen and Al-Marri top Class 1 standings

Faleh Al-Mansoori will team up with Rashed Al-Tayer for the first time in Team Abu Dhabi for this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix, round two of the 2013 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, at Pendik-Istanbul on the Marmara Sea.

The Emirati rookie performed well with Italian stand-in driver Tomaso Polli at the opening round in Sanya and has earned himself the driving seat in Team Abu Dhabi, as the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports (ADIMSC)-based team aims to close in on Victory 3’s Arif Saif Al-Zafeen and Mohammed Al-Marri in the points’ standings at the two Turkish races to be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Al-Tayer, 34, will be competing in his 14th Grand Prix meeting and takes the throttles of the Michael Peters-designed Team Abu Dhabi for the first time after 24 races as the driver. He has three race wins to date on his career curriculum vitae, having won both races at Uddevalle in Sweden in 2010 and one race at the team’s home grand prix in Abu Dhabi the same year.

“We are looking forward to this race and hope to be able to run at the front of the field,” said Al-Tayer. “Our back-up team are ready but we are aware that the competition is very strong and this increases the strength of the competition.”

“Over the past few months I have been preparing myself both physically and mentally for the race,” said Team Abu Dhabi’s rookie Faleh Al-Mansoori, who qualified in fifth position on his racing debut with Giampaolo Montavoci in Sanya and then went on to finish fifth and fourth in the two Chinese races with Polli. “I hope, god willing, to have given myself the best possible chance of a positive result, despite the strength of the other teams and their greater experience.”

Team Abu Dhabi runs under the auspices of the ADIMSC and has the support of Etihad Airways as the team’s official carrier for Class 1 racing. Salem Al-Romaithi acts as the head of operations with the team running under the chairmanship of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan.

“We are still relatively new to the sport of Class 1 racing,” said Salem Al-Romaithi. “We want to be strong in this sport in the future and it is important that we lay the foundations with team building. That is why we have opted for the experience of Al-Tayer and the youth of Al-Mansoori to give us a good balance to build on. I would also like to thank our official carrier Etihad Airways for their ongoing support.”

Victory 3 currently leads both the UIM Class 1 Pole Position and World Championship standings following their successes in China and Team Abu Dhabi holds fourth position in the main championship and fifth in the Edox Pole Position table.

The weekend’s timetable kicks off with registration and briefings at Marinturk Marina in the Asian side of the city on Thursday, June 13th before crews are permitted on to the 4.42Nm racecourse for 90 minutes’ practice from 10.30hrs on Friday morning. The Class 1 entrants will share the timetable with Class 3 racers and the Class 1 Edox Pole Position is scheduled for 14.00hrs on Friday afternoon.

Further practice is permitted on Saturday morning and the first of the two Turkish Grand Prix races gets underway from 15.30hrs. A third practice session on Sunday morning precedes the second Turkish Class 1 race that starts at a similar time of 15.30hrs.
