2013 UIM CLASS ONE WORLD POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP
Isiklar Turkish Grand Prix, June 14-16

•    Victory 3’s Al-Zafeen and Al-Marri roll and hook into retirement
•    Turkish GP win for Nicholson and Willaton in Hub Team Australia

Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashed Al-Tayer and Faleh Al-Mansoori survived hooking their boat into a tight turn on the eighth lap to finish fourth overall in the first Isiklar Turkish Grand Prix at the second round of the 2013 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, at Pendik-Istanbul on the Marmara Sea, on Saturday afternoon.

The new Emirati partnership, which runs under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) and has the support of Etihad Airways as the team’s official carrier, runs under the chairmanship of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan.

Victory 3’s Arif Saif Al-Zafeen and Mohammed Al-Marri led from pole position but eventually retired from a drama-filled race, which saw them flip over shortly after the start and then come to grief for a second time at the same tricky right-hand corner after seven laps.

Hub Team Australia’s Darren Nicholson and Ross Willaton had pressurised Victory 3 from the start and cruised to a comfortable victory once their main Emirati rivals had retired. Fendi Racing 10’s Luca Formilli-Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella lost out on a podium finish near the end and Zabo-Isiklar’s Ugur Isik and Christian Zaborowski finished second from Fendi Racing 8’s Alfredo Amato and Miles Jennings.

“After the incident it was important that we reached the finish and picked up some championship points,” said Team Abu Dhabi’s Al-Tayer. “This race has certainly closed up the championship.”

Victory 3 started from pole in cloudy and choppy conditions on the Marmara Sea and held the lead from Hub Team Australia and Fendi Racing 10 through the first turns and began to pull away at the start of the 12-lap race. But the race was red flagged soon afterwards after Victory 3 hooked into a right turn and barrel-rolled into the in-course.

The boat came to rest the right way up and Hub Team Australia led from Victory 3 after the restart with all eight boats back in action. The official results showed that the two Fendi Racing boats had taken the lead by the fourth lap, but Hub Team Australia had managed to pass and regain the advantage into lap six, with Fendi Racing 10 and Victory 3 running in second and third and Team Abu Dhabi down in sixth.

Victory 3 had regained the advantage, according to the inconsistent official results, by the end of lap six and led from Hub Team Australia, Fendi Racing 10, Fendi Racing 8 and Team Abu Dhabi heading into the second half of the race. All eight boats were still running.

But the Victory 3 boat hooked again into a corner and was forced out of contention, the incident handing the lead to Hub Team Australia. Team Abu Dhabi also came to a standstill at the same corner in a dramatic turn of events and the race was yellow flagged.

Hub Team Australia continued to press on towards the chequered flag, with Fendi Racing 10 in second place, Zabo-Isiklar in third and Fendi Racing 8 in fourth. Team Abu Dhabi managed to get going again and recovered water to hold fifth from Poliform.

Hub Team Australia’s lead was 13.69 seconds after nine of the 12 laps and the Australian crew eventually reached the chequered flag with an advantage of well over a minute from Zabo-Isiklar. Team Abu Dhabi came home in fourth.

Team Abu Dhabi only ran for two full laps in the morning’s practice session and set the sixth quickest time in a stint that was won by Zabo-Isiklar 91. The Turkish-Norwegian pairing of Ugur Isik and Christian Zaborowski were forced to miss Friday’s qualifying session with an engine issue, but they bounced back to dominate the practice session with a best lap of 2min 36.44sec.

A third shortened practice session on Sunday morning precedes a new non-points scoring qualifying stint before the second Isiklar Turkish Class 1 race starts at a similar time of 15.30hrs.
