Conrad Rautenbach review

03.03.2008: Conrad Rautenbach review

Rally Mexico FIA World Rally Championship, round 3/15

Leon, Mexico Day three

Stages: 3 (SS18 cancelled)

Weather: Sunny

Temperature range: 8 – 20 Celsius

Sporting:

Conrad Rautenbach repeated yesterday’s strong performance on the final day of Rally Mexico around Leon today, posting top-10 times on every one of the day’s stages. Unfortunately for the reigning FIA African Rally Champion, his hopes of climbing higher than 16th overall were hit by the rally organiser’s decision to cancel the second stage of the day – Guanajuatito – due to the higher number of spectators in the test.

Rautenbach and his British co-driver David Senior had started the final day in pursuit of more experience of the Citroen C4 WRC they will campaign for the remainder of the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship. To that end, the day was successful, with the 23-year-old driver collecting more competitive kilometres on the day’s three stages around Leon. Tenth quickest on the opening test, Rautenbach was eighth fastest on SS19 and 20.

Again, the crews were treated to warm spring sunshine on the Mexican roads, but this time there would only be one run through the stages – the event finished back in the Poliforum service park in Leon at mid-day, local time.

The event was won by the sister Citroen C4 WRC to Rautenbach’s, driven by Sebastien Loeb. Loeb’s Citroen Sport team-mate Dani Sordo finished one position behind Rautenbach in 17th place.

Rautenbach’s next event is Rally Argentina (March 28-30), where he will hope to avoid the kind of bad luck he experienced in Mexico; a broken track control arm on the third stage robbed him of what could have been a top six finish on his first outing in the C4 WRC.

Technical: The Citroen C4 WRC ran without any technical faults through the final day. There were no set-up changes to the car.

Conrad Rautenbach quote:

"Today has been good and I think the times are getting better. We didn’t make any changes last night and today we thought we would just leave it as it was and concentrate on getting some more mileage. It was a shame that the one stage today was cancelled, as we could do with all the time in the car we can get. In the last loop of stages, having driven the car for all of yesterday, I thought that the confidence was really starting to come.

"I think, coming from Juniors, I was a little bit too cautious, particularly with the tyres. These tyres are actually really strong, so you can come in quite tight to the corners, which maybe you wouldn’t do in a Junior car. With things like that, we’re just learning all the time – as we have been doing from the start of the rally really. We’ve got no testing before Argentina so that’s another rally we’re going straight into, but we’re hoping that David’s [Senior] experience will help a bit.

"You have to drive these WRC cars in a very special way: as smooth as possible but also carrying good speed and momentum through the corners. I’ve had some help from Seb [Loeb] and Dani [Sordo] who have given me some advice, but you don’t learn to drive these cars overnight."
