MRS with ups and downs at the seasons beginning in Dubai

21.01.2016: 24H Series 2016 - 24h Dubai. - MRS for the first time with three cars among 100 participants

24H Series 2016 - 24h Dubai.

- MRS for the first time with three cars among 100 participants

- MRS USA Porsche with accident at the beginning

- Bad luck fort he second Porsche in the early morning

- NISSAN with the 12th position in the A6 PRO class

The MRS team opened his racing season 2016 with the 24 hours race in Dubai. For the first time the team from Lonsee started with three cars in two categories; 100 racing cars were in the whole starting field of the 11th edition.

With the Nissan Nismo GTR GT3, known of the ADAC GT Masters, the team of Iris Dorr and Karsten Molitor started in the strong A6 class with following driver line-up: the Japanese Nissan driver Tomonobu Fujii (JPN), Ilya Melnikov (AUT), Bassam Kronfli (CAN) and Nissan GT Academy winner Ahmed Bin-Khanen (KSA).

With the goal to finish the race in the Top10, the team was in a good position; the Nissan was under the fastest five cars in all training sessions.

Next to the Nissan, MRS started again with two Porsche 991 Cup cars, whose class with 19 cars had really strong drivers. For the drivers of the MRS US Porsche, who a few weeks ago won the 12 hours race in Abu Dhabi, the goal was to gain much points as possible.

After all the drivers quartet with Charlie Putman (US), Charles Espenlaub (US), Joe Foster (US) and Xavier Maassen (NL) will participate in the whole season of the Creventic endurance series. The driver line-up of the second MRS Porsche consisted of experienced amateurs and talented newcomers.

Next to the two Japanese Takizawa Tomoyuki and Yutaka Matsushima, Nadir Zuhour (JORD), Dylan Pereira (LUX) and the young Danish Mikkel Overgaard Pederson shared the work behind the steering wheel of the Porsche.

The race started on Friday afternoon at 14.00 o’clock. Just after 30 minutes the first incident occurred for the MRS team. While Xavier Maassen was overtaking in the traffic on the start finish line, a Ginetta hit him. Maassen spun and hit the wall; Maassen almost hit the sister car with the number 46.

Regarding this accident the MRS US Porsche was damaged so heavily that he had to resign. Maassen was brought to the hospital with slight injuries. Luckily he was released out of the hospital on the same evening with a slight concussion. The first „Code60“, a virtual Safetycar, was the beginning of a long and hard race for all participants.

Also the sister car, the 911 with the starting number 46, had contact with another participant on the early evening, so that the steering had to be changed. Although Dylan Pereira was able to drive the fastest laps in the Cup class, the team dropped down in the overall class because of the repair. About four hours before the end of the race the number 46 had to retire, a problem in the cooling systems had overheat the engine.

During the night a Mercedes SLS hit the MRS Nissan and the car had to be transported to the paddock. The accident repair lasted 55 minutes before „Godzilla“ could regain the track. After 24 hours the Nissan GTR reached the 23th position overall and the 12th position in the PRO class. During the whole race the Nissan drove fastest lap times without any little technical issue on the car.

Karsten Molitor:
„With a starting field of 100 cars in different classes, with a performance difference of 400 HP (!), high attention was recommended and also a little race luck. Unfortunately we did not have this luck. The early retirement of the US Porsche is really a pity, especially also because of the lost points, but we are really happy that Xavier is fine.

But on the other side we are very happy about the performance of our drivers, who showed in the sessions, that they were one of the fastest in the field. The Nissan was very reliable during the race; fast lap times without any technical issues.

Of course the incident in the night threw us back, without this incident we surely had reached the goal of a top10 position. Indeed we had bad luck with the second Porsche, but we are pleased that the mix of young newcomers and experienced 24 hours driver ran well. Especially the speed of our two young stars was a real pleasure.

I want to thank our crew, who are the basis of such a race weekend with their tireless work. Again all cars were well prepared; every pit stop during the race was fast and faultless. Also thank you to the drivers and partners; already in eight weeks we will have the possibility to get the deserved earnings at the 12 hours of Mugello.“
