Norway Racing's Daniel Storkersen to join Thailand Super Series in Buriram

07.07.2016: Norway Racing is pleased to announce that Daniel Størkersen will join Thailand

Norway Racing is pleased to announce that Daniel Størkersen will join Thailand Super Series for its forthcoming round, which takes place at Chang International Circuit in Buriram this weekend (8-10 July).

The promising 16-year-old Norwegian driver enjoyed his first race in Thailand when he took part in the opening round of the 2016 RAAT Endurance Championship at the same circuit back in May and this represents a quick return to the North East which will offer him further valuable learning time in his first season driving a production level racing car. This will represent just his second race event in a closed roof car.

Daniel, who holds an FIA C-Senior licence, raced for several years in karting before moving up to the single-seater Asia Cup Series last year in preparation for a graduation to production cars this year.

The youngster is regarded as one of Norway’s most promising racing drivers of the future and currently splits his time between Norway and Singapore.

His career development calls for him to race in production level cars this year before switching to sportscars in 2017.

Norway’s Tommy Østgaard Race Academy has been closely supporting Daniel’s career so far and as part of the future development process Singapore-based Pioneer Consultants has been drafted as a long-term strategy is put in place.

That means New Zealand driver and racing coach Will Bamber will directly oversee Daniel’s future development, both as a mentor and manager, but also driving alongside him in the RAAT Endurance races to provide an ideal benchmark.

Also within the Pioneer management framework guiding Daniel’s evolving career is Will’s brother, Porsche factory driver Earl Bamber, the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours winner;

so Daniel clearly has a great mix of proven experience to guide him. It’s a strategy that is already reaping rewards this year.

This weekend though the young Norwegian driver will have the cockpit to himself as he will be driving the team’s #2 Honda City in Thailand Super Series’ Super Compact category.

Super Compact is a new addition to the programme of Thailand’s biggest domestic racing series and already looks like providing an exciting platform.

The idea from the organisers is to provide a junior level category where everyone can learn – drivers, teams and technicians – and it’s applicable to most B-segment cars that are then equalised to balance their performance.

For Daniel’s supporters the RAAT Endurance championship, with its traditional 6-hour race format, is regarded as a perfect fit and taking in the latest Thailand Super Series round in Buriram is a logical extra race in the programme, especially due to the fast-growing international reputation of the Thai championship, the experienced competition it provides and the obvious learning opportunities – particularly as it allows useful cockpit time for further evaluation ahead of the next round of RAAT Endurance which will take place in September.

The opening round of RAAT Endurance Championship represented Daniel’s first time racing a production car and the initial targets were met.

Having qualified very well the City was forced to start from the back of the grid (from 29th place) but Daniel and his teammates steadily battled all the way up to seventh position before a major gearbox problem dropped them down to a mid teens finish.

Thailand Super Series will be a great opportunity for the youngster to benchmark that performance, tackle his first ‘sprint’ type race and start to look towards the next round of the RAAT Endurance Championship.

Tommy Østgaard Race Academy and Pioneer Consultants will support Daniel this weekend.

The after unofficial practicing today the official track action for Super Compact will kick off early tomorrow morning (Friday 8 July) with the half hour Free Practice session, from 0800-0830, before Qualifying takes place just after lunchtime (1330-1400).

Race 1 will be held on Saturday morning (9 July), starting at 0915 and will be 11 laps, while Race 2 comes up on Sunday (10 July) at 0945 and is also of 11 laps duration.

Daniel Størkersen: “
It’s great to be back here in Buriram for my first sprint race in the Honda City. I enjoyed my last race here; it’s a great track with superb facilities and people.

My progress so far this year has gone surprisingly well, I have learnt a lot and I’m hoping to improve even more throughout the season and I’m pleased to be learning from my great coach Will.”
