Moritz Mueller-Crepon: Seventh race weekend ADAC Formula 4

25.08.2016: Circuit Park Zandvoort Moritz Mueller-Crepon experienced a difficult weekend at the 4.307-km track

Circuit Park Zandvoort

Moritz Mueller-Crepon experienced a difficult weekend at the 4.307-km track, set amongst the dunes of Zandvoort. The third race, in particular, was chaotic because of the rain.

Qualifying

Moritz Mueller-Crepon qualified eleventh in his group, starting from 22nd on the grid.

Race 1

After qualifying did not go as planned, it was evident that the races would be difficult, as overtaking is almost impossible on the narrow Circuit Park Zandvoort.

“It was easy to see that in the race, which is why I describe mine as unspectacular,” explained Mueller-Crepon. “It was the aim to keepout of trouble and finish the race, and I achieved that goal.”

The 19-year-old crossed the finish line in 20th place.

Race 2

Moritz Mueller-Crepon started from 17th on the grid.

It was a similar situation in the second race of the weekend, with Mueller-Crepon faster than the drivers ahead of him, but the Van Amersfoort was unable to find a way past. He also found himself behind Simo Laaksonen (Motopark) for several laps. “Even though this race have been better than the first, I still was unable to overtake,” he stated.

After Julian Hanses (Team Timo Scheider) ended his race in the gravel trap, the Safety Car was deployed. Ronald Dobmeier would return to the pits just before the end, with the remaining drivers having just one turn left to go. However, there were no changes in the running order at the chequered flag, with Mueller-Crepon finishing in 13th.

Race 3

Moritz Mueller-Crepon started 20th on the grid.

The third and last race of the ADAC Formula 4 weekend at Zandvoort was declared wet, meaning the field would be behind the Safety Car for two laps, before a flying start saw Mueller-Crepon make up two places.

The Safety Car had to reappear after race leader Janneau Esmeijer (Team Timo Scheider) found his race end early in the gravel. Ronald Dobmeier retired in the pits once again on lap 6 and as the action resumed, Moritz closed in on Jenzer driver Fabio Scherer at turn two.

“I was on the inside and tried to overtake, but Fabio closed the door, which was a racing incident,” explained the 19-year-old, who ended up with a flat tyre. A few corners later would see utter chaos break out, as two major accidents happened almost simultaneously, which also involved car number 25.

The TV broadcast showed a heated discussion between both Moritz Mueller-Crepon and Luca Engstler. Having crashed earlier, it left the Van Amersfoort driver with a pulled muscle on his right hand. “That was not racing, and it is a big shame how things went,” concluded Mueller-Crepon. As a result, the race was red-flagged, with the Swiss driver ending up 17th.

Moritz Mueller-Crepon:
“I wasn’t in a particularly good position after qualifying. However, we worked hard all weekend, which showed out on track during the races. We came to Zandvoort, determined to bring our bad run to an end, but unfortunately, we did not succeed, as far the results are concerned

. It’s my aim at the last round in Hockenheim to finish in the points again, to help Van Amersfoort Racing to win the team championship.“

Manager Marlise Lienhard:
“The second ADAC Formula 4 season is approaching its conclusion, and you can see the level of performance getting higher, with all of the top ten drivers reaching 95 percent of the lap times that are theoretically possible.

Those drivers that are competing in the series for a second successive year, are in control of qualifying, which characterizes this sport. I observed that fighting loses a driver time, and the gap to the drivers out in front goes out of reach.

This means that we are watching races with fast and talented youngsters, who are not able to improve their positions, due to the very high performance level between many equal drivers. On the one hand this characterizes the series which is very valuable, but the negative side is that individual drivers are put under so much pressure to perform.

This has caused dangerous situations in the past, which has seen sport fade way into the background, and simply put, it was all about making up positions at any cost. In my opinion, the series, which is intended to be a support program, as an entry-level category, should change this aspect as soon as possible. “

The season finale of the 2016 German ADAC Formula 4 Championship takes place at the Hockenheimring between the 30th of September and the 2nd of October.
