TSS Round 2, Buriram: Super Compact Race

04.09.2016: THAILAND SUPER SERIES - Round 2 BURIRAM During the second round for TSS, the return trip to Buriram, battle

THAILAND SUPER SERIES - Round 2 BURIRAM

During the second round for TSS, the return trip to Buriram, battle resumed between Pasarit Phromsombat and Kajornsak Na Songkhla in Super Compact and, just as was the story during the season opener, the two were out front and inseparable throughout the second round of the year.

No one got a look in as they locked out the front row in qualifying and from pole position in Race 1 Pasarit fended off his rival for lap after lap until Kajornsak finally found a gap and took it. After that he was able to maintain a cushion and run out the winner.

The story in the second race was much the same as the pair battled through the reverse grid with Pasarit starting on the second row and getting the advantage over Kajornsak one row behind.

It didn't take them long to assert their dominance, they were quickly into the lead and soon pulling away from the pack. They would never be headed again and like the first race Kajornsak would harry Pasarit until eventually he found a way though.

In the championship classification after four races it’s 65 points to 60 points with the advantage going to Pasarit. However Kajornsak is the driver with the current form, he has three straight wins but his DNF in the season opener has proved costly and he cannot afford any more unreliability if he is to challenge for the title. Pasarit meanwhile won the opening race and has racked up three straight runners up spots since. There is almost nothing between this pair.

Third in the standings, albeit a long way adrift of the top two, comes the first of the Innovation Motorsport Mazda2 machines, the #55 of Michael Freeman. The Australian picked up 10 points for fourth place in the first race to move up to 32 points.

A pair of third places for Super Compact debutant, Kittitat Vongprai in the S.C. Motorsport Honda City elevates him to fourth in the championship while the top five overall is completed by the second Innovation Motorsport Mazda2, the #44 of Tachapan Vijittranon, but much more significantly the teenage lady racer is leading the Class C standings.

Expected front-runner Settasit Boonyakiat had a torrid weekend in the #93 Honda Fit. In the first race he was landed with a stop-go penalty that left him fighting back only to be later excluded for having stopped in the incorrect grid box

In the second race he was hit by transmission issues that left him with just first, fourth and sixth gears and that slowed the Honda down and he eventually was only able to cover 7 laps by the time the checkered flag was waved which wasn’t enough to be classified and collect any points. He left the North East with a zero score to his name and slips down to seventh in the championship standings.

In Class C Tachapan has opened out an 11 point advantage at the front as the rookie class continued to attract new entrants. She picked up a fine second place in Class C in the first race and scraped a fifth in the second, after having been hit by a pair of 30 second penalties, the first for being out of her grid box and the second for contact with another competitor.

With consistency coupled to the Mazda2’s reliability she should be able to make a run at the title.

Also turning in a performance worthy of note was Daniel Størkersen in the Norway Racing Honda City. The 16-year-old Norwegian driver was making his TSS debut, just his second race in a closed roof car and his first in a sprint race.

Engine issues dropped the youngster out of the first Super Compact race of the weekend but during the final race he battled his way up into the Class C lead before being tapped by another car; however he recovered well and finished second to take a trip to the podium at his first attempt.
