GP3 Series - Abu Dhabi
Yas Marina Circuit   / United Arab Emirates

The anticipation is almost over! The GP3 Series sets up camp at the spectacular Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi for the ninth and final round of the 2016 season.

And what an enthralling season finale we have in store with the title going down to wire! Three drivers can claim the coveted GP3 crown: Series leader Charles Leclerc (ART Grand Prix), Alexander Albon (ART Grand Prix) and Antonio Fuoco (Trident).

The penultimate round of the year took place at the Sepang International Circuit with the Series making its maiden visit to the Malaysian track.

Albon showed his grit and determination to pocket the Race 1 victory and remain a strong contender in the hunt for the crown. However, Leclerc also remained calm and controlled to achieve another rostrum behind Arden’s Jack Aitken.

The glory belonged to Jake Dennis in Race 2 after the Briton grabbed his second win of the campaign, with Leclerc and Albon picking up the minor points on offer.

Therefore, the Monegasque retained his lead in the drivers’ standing by 29 points over Albon. It was a challenging weekend for Fuoco; the Italian was keen to do all he could to continue his title charge but walked away from Sepang with only four points to his tally.

However, Fuoco still has a mathematical chance of clinching the title and with his fighting spirit; nothing is over until the chequered flag on Sunday.

Pirelli have nominated the Super-soft compound for this event which is the first time this season the Series will have run with this tyre.

As ever, high temperatures are expected at the Abu Dhabi track. It is a track well known to a large majority of drivers with the post-season tests being conducted here.

Practice and Qualifying will both take place on a Friday, with the deciding races run on Saturday and Sunday. Don’t miss the culmination of another entertaining season with our immensely talented young drivers emerging to move up the motorsport ladder.

Pirelli's Racing Manager Mario Isola commented

“In GP3, three drivers can become champion in Abu Dhabi. They will hope to follow in the footsteps of last year’s champion Esteban Ocon, who has already raced in Formula 1 and made a great impression, earning himself a full season in 2017.

In GP3, having the softest tyre compound available should help to promote even more great racing. As all the GP3 races take place during the heat of the day, drivers will need to be aware of the effect of track temperature on tyre behaviour.”

The driver who claims the GP3 title this weekend will become the seventh GP3 Champion since the inception of the Series in 2010.

The points advantage Charles Leclerc has over his nearest title rival and teammate Alexander Albon.

The number of different winners this season: (Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon, Antonio Fuoco, Ralph Boschung, Jack Aitken, Matthew Parry, Jake Hughes, Jake Dennis and Nyck de Vries).

Yas Marina Circuit is certainly one of the most unique tracks I’ve been too in terms of the atmosphere. The weather is always nice and the sun is really strong.

The track is so smooth and it’s got almost every corner you can think of: chicanes, high-speed hairpins, long and short straights… it’s a pleasure to drive around here. I was fortunate enough to drive here last year at the post-season test.

My favourite part of the circuit is Turn 17. If you get it right, you feel really good about yourself as the braking is so tricky. It’s a right-hand turn and you arrive at a weird angle; so it’s very easy to lock up and lose the front and rear.

I feel really happy when I get that right (Laughs). I think we will be quite strong as a team here since we have experience testing around this track so we have some good knowledge.

I am really looking to racing with the super soft tyres around her and I expect some great racing.

> Pirelli will use the Super-soft compound for the first time this season around the Yas Marina Circuit.

> Series leader Charles Leclerc turned down the opportunity to contest FP1 with the Haas F1 Team this weekend so he could fully concentrate his efforts on his race weekend in GP3 with the title at stake.

> Three drivers are in contention for the illustrious GP3 crown: Charles Leclerc (202), Alexander Albon (173) and Antonio Fuoco (157).

> Second and third place in the Teams’ Standings are still up for grabs with Arden International on (240), Trident (170) and Koiranen GP (147).

> The GP3 teams will conduct a three day post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit on Nov 30 – Dec 01 – Dec 02.

> Our new GP3 champion (whoeverthat may be) will follow in some veryimpressive footsteps with four of our former Champions having reached F1 (Esteban Ocon, Daniil Kvyat, Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutiérrez) while Alex Lynn and Mitch Evans graduated to GP2.
