Dakar Rally 2017
 Stage 8 Uyuni - Salta 892 km
Tuesday, January 10th 2016

quad  Camelia leads the ladies

9 women are taking part in the Dakar this year. The best placed female competitor, Camelia Liparoti, is a regular on the Dakar, for this is her 9th edition. The Frenchwoman is showing her male counterparts just how it should be done, because she currently occupies a superb 16th place in the quad category general standings.

06:45  quad 267 - Koolen can do anything!

Kees Koolen, the convincing winner of stage, is putting in one hell of a performance. The Dutchman has participated in the Dakar in four categories (bike, quad, car and truck). Versatile is probably his middle name…

06:36 - bike 047 - Kozac leads the unassisted bikers

Jose Julian Kozac is still enjoying an excellent Dakar and still leads the unassisted bikers' classification behind the handlebars of his KTM, whilst occupying 46th place in the general standings. His nearest pursuer, Robert Van Pelt, trails him by more than 20 minutes.

06:30 - bike 023 - De Soultrait penalised

Xavier de Soultrait has also started stage 8. The Frenchman is one of the bikers who received a 6-minute penalty for arriving late at the start of yesterday's special, just like Hélder Rodrigues, who was handed a 5-minute penalty.

06:21 - bike 011 - No choice for Barreda

Joan Barreda lies 1 hour and 14 minutes behind soar-away Sam Sunderland and has no choice but to go on the attack to regain time from all his rivals. That is a piece of luck, because going on the attack is the Honda rider's favourite exercise…

06:13 - bike 014 Sunderland hits the road

Super Sam Sunderland, the third rider to start today, still boasts a solid lead in the general standings. The skilful KTM rider is not making mistakes and will again attempt to avoid today's pitfalls.

06:10 - bike 009 -Brabec kicks off the special

Ricky Brabec is the first competitor to start the special after his victory on yesterday's stage. It will be a difficult task for the American, who will try and avoid being caught by his team-mate Paulo Gonçalves who will start three minutes after him.

06:05 Yesterday's withdrawals

Stage 7 saw the end of two competitors' ambitions: Argentinean Gustavo Gallego, 2nd on stage 5, whose Yamaha quad gave up the ghost on him, and Brazilian biker Gregorio Caselani, who did not even start the stage.

06:02 New road-book

The first bikes are arriving at the start of the special, the first part of which has been shortened by 73 km to restart at the border with Argentina. As regards the trucks, they will only do battle on the 174 km in Bolivia, before travelling to Salta along a link section.
