Harry Webb closes on F4 podium with best yet at Donington Park

17.04.2017: Harry Webb enjoyed his best weekend to date in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford with a strong

Harry Webb enjoyed his best weekend to date in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford with a strong performance on track at Donington Park that saw him firmly in the mix for a place on the podium.

The Norfolk racer went into the weekend looking to build on an encouraging debut with the Corby-based Richardson Racing team at Brands Hatch two weeks earlier, where he successfully broke into the top ten for the first time.

A solid performance in qualifying saw Harry secure eighth place on the grid for the opening race, and he then produced a measured drive on his first race outing at the challenging Donington circuit to finish seventh overall – and third amongst the Challenge Cup entrants.

Having just missing out on the reverse grid pole for race two, which saw the top six from race one reversed, Harry soon set about making forward progress through the field when the lights went out at the start.

Into the top six by the end of the opening lap, Harry then fought his way up to fifth on lap six before a series of quick laps allowed him to close on fourth placed Oscar Piastri ahead.

Showing his racecraft as well as his speed, Harry made his move with two laps to go to secure fourth spot, leaving him less than a second away from the overall podium in just his fifth F4 race. Second amongst the Challenge Cup drivers was also his best class result to date.

Sunday’s third race looked set to provide Harry with his best chance yet of a podium finish, with a storming start seeing him move up five places from eleventh on the grid on the opening lap alone.

After just three laps however, Harry’s charge towards the top three was halted by a serious accident involving rivals Patrik Pasma and Billy Monger that forced the race to be stopped, with the decision then taken not to restart.

With half points awarded for his fifth position, Harry ends the weekend tenth in the championship standings ahead of the third meeting of the year at Thruxton.

“We’ve shown strong pace throughout the weekend and I think we’ve made good progress since Brands Hatch,” he said. “We’re still working to improve and I’m still learning, so to get so close to the podium in such a competitive field is fantastic at this stage.

“We had a good run in race one and I was really pleased with how strongly we performed in race two. There’s no doubt we were on for a good result in race three as well after such a good start as I felt really comfortable in the conditions and was catching the guys ahead, although my thoughts now are with the guys who were caught up in the accident.

“Overall, I’m happy with how I performed this weekend, and with more time in the car and more experience, we are only going to get quicker. I don’t think a podium finish is far away.”

Harry’s performance in his only his second outing in British F4 drew praise from team boss Gwyn Richardson as the youngster continued to build on the undoubted promise he displayed during pre-season testing.

“The British F4 grid is very competitive this season, and Harry did a fantastic job to be consistently in the top ten this weekend,” he said. “To be knocking on the door of an overall podium means he is beginning to realise his true potential, and with more still to come as he gains more experience, we’re really looking forward to the next outing to see what he can do.”

Everyone involved with the Richardson Racing team would like to wish both Billy Monger and Patrik Pasma a full recovery from their injuries.
