The third leg began with a bang as several drivers reported problems upon completion of the day's opening test. Matthew Wilson reported an off, and his Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team team-mate Luis Perez Companc spent a large amount of time after an off trying to get back onto the stage. Sebastien Loeb ended a fantastic day of rallying with the top times on both runnings of Rally Japan's superspecial. Loeb completed the stage 0.3sec ahead of Marcus Gronholm on both runs. Gronholm will begin the start of leg three 25.6sec down on the leader.

The first stage of the day's afternoon loop had been run three times prior as the second, sixth and twelfth stages which caused rutting to occur. Combined with water and mud, the relatively short stage proved to be difficult for several drivers. The fourth contest of the second leg saw Kronos Total Citroen World Rally Team's Sebastien Loeb capture the rally lead from BP-Ford World Rally Team's Marcus Gronholm. Gronholm completed the stage noticeably off the pace, dropping a large amount of time due to a spin during the stage.

In theory brakes should not be a problem on Rally Japan, temperatures are not too high and whilst the stages are a combination of fast sections broken up by tight and twisty stretches, there should be sufficient time for the brakes to cool down. Therefore it comes as a surprise to hear a number of the top drivers complaining or showing concern about their brakes.

Subaru World Rally Team's Petter Solberg continued to suffer mechanical problems with his Impreza during Rally Japan. After a disastrous first leg for the Norwegian, the second day showed promise, but a problem developed on the third stage of the day. "No brakes, no brakes," Solberg said at the end of the contest.

The second stage of the second leg, Rikubetsu 3, saw OMV-Peugeot Norway World Rally Team driver Manfred Stohl reply to Subaru World Rally Team's Chris Atkinson's charge on the previous stage. Stohl completed the short stage a mere 0.4sec ahead of Atkinson as the battle for fourth overall continued into the day.

On the second Leg's opening contest, Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team driver Matthew Wilson suffered a mechanical problem before the young Brit even reached the start line. "We've got no boost," Wilson said at the end of the stage, "we just crawled through." Wilson finished one minute 22.7sec behind his team-mate - Luis Perez Companc - on the stage.

The first day of Rally Japan had a familiar feel to it. It started wet and Marcus Gronholm and Sebastien Loeb made the early running, with Mikko Hirvonen right behind them and Petter Solberg looking strong until he suffered mechanical problems. Just like in Finland, two weeks ago.
