Max Fewtrell marks his turf at Silverstone

18.05.2018: Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP) got his weekend off to a near perfect start in setting a new Formula Renault Eurocup track record at Silverstone.

Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP) got his weekend off to a near perfect start in setting a new Formula Renault Eurocup track record at Silverstone.

The British driver of the Renault Sport Academy posted a lap of 1:55.767s to improve upon the time set by Renault Sport Affiliated Driver Anthoine Hubert in 2015.

He was followed by rookie drivers Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport) and Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport). Sixth this morning, Yifei Ye (Josef Kaufmann Racing) led the way in the afternoon.

The Formula Renault Eurocup field had four hours of track time on Thursday to familiarize to the track. On home soil, Max Fewtrell set best time of the day in 1:56.568s ahead of fellow Renault Sport Academy driver Christian Lundgaard and Lorenzo Colombo.

Max Fewtrell shines at home

The first collective test was run under sunny skies as Max Fewtrell, Victor Martins (R-ace GP) and Lorenzo Colombo battled for the top spot.

Back in command at the halfway point in the session, Max Fewtrell got down to business with ten minutes remaining on the clock. The Briton improved his best time twice to post the fastest lap in 1:55.767s, 0.3s ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Lorenzo Colombo, Logan Sargeant (R-ace GP) and Charles Milesi (R-ace GP) completed the top five.

Collective tests 1 - Yifei Ye stops the Briton’s streak

In the afternoon, Max Fewtrell kept the momentum going as he quickly went to the top of the time sheet. Six minutes from the end of the session, Yifei Ye went better in 1:56.487s before the session ended prematurely to collect the car of Christian Hahn (Fortec Motorsports).

The Chinese driver finished ahead of Max Fewtrell and Lorenzo Colombo in a top six made up of the same drivers from the morning session. For his part, Oscar Piastri (Arden Motorsport) was away from the cockpit in the afternoon to take his university exams.

Collective tests 2On Saturday, the drivers will contest the first qualifying session at 9:00 before the first race of the weekend at 13:35.

Quotes

Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP):
“The weekend has gotten off to a really good start with a promising pace. The hardest part is still to come. We have to stay focused for qualifying tomorrow morning. In any case, it could hardly be worse than Monza, where I was taken out in both races. However, my approach is still the same because I wasn’t to blame.”

Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport): “
Yesterday, I was able to relearn the track and put in the laps. That’s what was most important to be ready this weekend. Today, the first session was pretty good despite the three tenths that separates me from Max.

We tried some stuff with the set-ups and now we know what to do tomorrow. I am not particularly worried and I’m even looking forward to qualifying. As always, I will give it everything I’ve got to be as successful as I was at Monza and try to extend my lead.”

Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport)
: “This is my first time at Silverstone. I wanted to accelerate my learning curve in following other drivers to use their racing lines. It worked well because I finished third in both sessions. I still need to work on certain corners and set-ups to make up the tenths I’m missing.

The experience of my team mate Thomas Maxwell on this circuit is an asset. I remain confident, because I know that my times will improve as I accumulate the laps. Precision in the high-speed bends will be the main challenge!”

Yifei Ye (Josef Kaufmann Racing):
“I got out over my skis a little bit at Monza. I know that I can’t take any useless risks in my bid for the title. As I wasn’t very good last year at Silverstone, the goal was to use the tests to find the best references.

Max is at ease on his home track, but I was quickest this afternoon despite a big mistake. It’s good, but we have to keep digging in as much as it will be cold tomorrow. The track will also change with the rubber laid down from the other categories.”
