Signatech Alpine Matmut ready to battle in the 24 Hours of Le Mans

04.06.2018: • Working hard throughout the 24 Hours of Le Mans Test Day, Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrão and Pierre Thiriet accumulated more than 1100km in the N°36 Alpine A470

•    Working hard throughout the 24 Hours of Le Mans Test Day, Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrão and Pierre Thiriet accumulated more than 1100km in the N°36 Alpine A470.

•    While working mainly on race settings, the Signatech Alpine Matmut team was 5th in the LMP2 class.

•    The drivers will return to action on Wednesday June 13th, with first free-practice sessions and qualifying.

Ideal summer like conditions welcomed the field in the morning session. After a short run by Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrão took over for a programme focused on the overall balance of the car.

Before handing over to Pierre Thiriet, the Brazilian clocked the best time for the n°36 in the session, with a lap completed in 3:31.873s, which was the fifth best time among LMP2 cars.

Following a one-hour break, the team continued its programme in concentrating on the 2018 Dunlop tyres. With a time of 3:29.205s, Nicolas Lapierre put the n°36 provisionally atop the category.

The conditions thereafter improved and the Alpine moved up to fifth. But the French team already changed target by focusing on long stints in race conditions. At the very end of the session, priority was given to optimizing fuel consumption, which is one of the key elements for success at Le Mans.

The next important phase comes on Sunday June 10, with the administrative and technical checks at the Place de la République in the Le Mans city centre. The n°36 Alpine A470 and its crew will go through the process at 4:20 in the afternoon.

Quotes

Philippe Sinault, Team principal Signatech Alpine Matmut

“With 82 laps completed today, we were one of the busiest teams and we feel we did what we set out to do. During the morning, we quickly found the set-ups, which offer a good compromise between aerodynamic finesse and a “comfortable” ride. This balance suited the three drivers, so we worked on evaluating the two types of Dunlop rubber.

Our best performance was attained early in the afternoon, while it was still very hot. These were not ideal conditions to put in the absolute best time, but it was a conscious decision, which let us then work on double and triple stints, then on fuel consumption. I think I can say we are ready.”

 Nicolas Lapierre

“It was a hectic day, with several interruptions due to incidents. As for us, we were able to run a lot and work on what we had scheduled to. We are quite fast and now we have a good understanding of the different types of tyres.

Everyone found their bearings and we are ready for what comes next. During the four or five days to come, the priority will be to rest up in order to return to Le Mans in prime shape. We will also spend time analysing the data from these test sessions. The only thing that is sure is that the time will fly by just until the start of the race.”

 André Négrão

“We did a good job in the test sessions today. We all feel confident in the Alpine A470 and this is very positive. We have a fast and consistent car, a strong technical team and we must continue to work together to head into qualifying in the best terms.

This day was also a chance for us to run both on a fresh and very hot track surface. Thus, we have a lot of data to carefully work with to ensure we have not missed something.”

 Pierre Thiriet

“Generally speaking, I felt very good in the car today. We did a good job to improve the set-ups and head toward a package that suits all three drivers. I finished my programme with a full stint simulation that confirmed what we believe.

The Alpine A470 is very stable and as a driver I feel confident behind the wheel and it allowed me to naturally string together fast lap times. This notion of confidence makes all the difference at Le Mans. At the same time, I know that you can’t get ahead of yourself, because everything from the track itself, to our competitors as well as us will improve.”
