Hong Kong’s WIN Motorsport celebrated two finishes at this weekend’s Road to Le Mans, the prelude to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, with team founder and driver William Lok partnering with US motorsport titan and Grand Prix Association of Long Beach President & CEO Jim Michaelian.

Proudly flying the flag for Hong Kong, WIN Motorsport’s Ligier JS P3 Nissan was resplendent in partner Gulf’s blue and orange livery, as the team helped mark the 50th anniversary of Gulf’s first Le Mans victory.

Taking the chequered flag in Saturday’s second Road to Le Mans race was particularly significant for Michaelian, who has had a lifelong dream of competing at Le Mans.  Michaelian is in his 70s and has previously contested the famous Daytona 24 Hours 16 times, and made his debut at La Sarthe this weekend.

Qualifying proved a first hurdle for the team and WIN Motorsport was forced to start from the back of the grid for Thursday afternoon’s first race. Lok, however, was determined to overcome the day’s earlier challenge and last year’s Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup Champion moved through the field, climbing up 12 positions before handing over to Michaelian.

The team was eager to improve upon Thursday’s result and for Saturday’s second 55-minute race, Lok again took the first stint. Lok’s early efforts were thwarted when early in the race, an incident brought out the Safety Car. The result was that Lok had just two laps of racing.  Still, the Hong Kong driver gained 10 positions before Michaelian took over driving duties.

“It was a nice weekend out here at Road to Le Mans and completing a bucket list item for Jim was special and we are all happy about it,” Lok said.

“Jim is a truly amazing person and I have so much respect for his dedication to race this circuit in a prototype. I have learned so much from his humble attention to detail and his desire to do his best and get the most out of every session on and off the track.”

With another successful Road to Le Mans complete, Lok is already looking ahead to the team’s next endeavour:

“I’m very glad that I had the opportunity to learn from a motorsport titan like Jim and we at WIN Motorsport are so glad that he could join us in France and I look forward to a future in IMSA with him at Long Beach next year.”

While the Le Mans 24 Hours is for LMP1, LMP2 and GTE cars, Road to Le Mans provides a high-profile showcase for the increasingly popular LMP3 category. WIN Motorsport earned its coveted seat on the grid thanks to its dominant victory in the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup last year, earning its first championship title within months of its formation. Last year the team took a top 10 finish on its debut in the event.

WIN Motorsport’s partnership with Gulf began in 2017, and the successful collaboration continues to grow. Gulf Oil’s association with top-flight international motorsport began in the 1930s, and was immortalised by Steve McQueen in the 1971 movie ‘Le Mans’ which featured the Gulf Porsche 917. Famous for its success at the world’s toughest endurance race, the Gulf Ford GT40 claimed victory there in both 1968 and ’69.
