Peugeot 207 Spider Cup -Dino Lunardi concludes in style

15.10.2007: Peugeot 207 Spider Cup -Dino Lunardi concludes in style

After making sure of the 2007 title yesterday, Dino Lunardi celebrated his crown today by putting in a stylish grand-slam performance (victory, pole and fastest race lap) in the second race of the weekend's meeting at Magny-Cours, France.

The final encounter of the 2007 207 Spider Cup this weekend at Magny-Cours had all the makings of staging another exciting clash between the newly-crowned champion Dino Lunardi and Julien Briché and the pair effectively ran nose to tail for much the early part of the race.

However, spurred on by the prospect of driving the 908 HDi FAP which was present at the French circuit, and waiting for him alongside the podium, Dino Lunardi decided to pull out all the stops to pull clear of his chaser and eventually cross the line with a lead of almost 10 seconds. "I couldn't have dreamed of a better way to round off the year," beamed Dino after the finish.

"On top of that, Peugeot Sport gave me the surprise honour of being able to sit in the 908 just before the finish ceremony. It don't think I full realise yet what I'm about to live through over the next few weeks." Indeed, Dino is scheduled to meet up with the 908 programme's drivers in ten days' time for a physical fitness programme before going on to meet the team and having a seat made for him at Vélizy. The icing on the cake, of course, will be a day at the wheel of the 908 on 6 December at Paul Ricard, France!

With nobody to challenge him, Julien Briché went on to finish the sprint in second spot which was sufficient to dislodge Grégory Guilvert from second place in the final championship standings. The latter was unable to take part in qualifying for the race after his Spider caught fire and was forced to start the race from the back of the grid. Even so, he put in a spirited drive to steal a footing on the podium in the dying stages. Briton Simon Moulton concluded his weekend with fourth place ahead of Julien Schell, while Benoît Lison came out on top of his scrap with Damien Chanard.

Despite the absence of the Belgian brigade from the season's final showdown, the 2007 Nations Cup goes to Belgium ahead of Germany who finished strongly thanks to Oliver Freymuth.

The technical regulations of the 207 Spider Cup will evolve for 2008. The changes essentially concern reliability and power and next year's cars can be expected to deliver more than 30 extra horsepower. The series will continue to be based on the calendar of the Le Mans Series, along with slots in a Super Série FFSA meeting in France and at the WTCC round at Pau. And once again the prize for the champion will be a test drive in the 908 HDi FAP.
