The Top Four and Formula Renault Eurocup title for R-ace GP!

16.09.2018: R-ace GP scored a resounding sweep of the top four in race 2 of the Formula Renault Eurocup at the Nürburgring. By finishing ahead of fellow Renault Sport Academy driver, Victor Martins as well as his team-mates Charles Milesi and Logan Sargeant

R-ace GP scored a resounding sweep of the top four in race 2 of the Formula Renault Eurocup at the Nürburgring.

By finishing ahead of fellow Renault Sport Academy driver, Victor Martins as well as his team-mates Charles Milesi and Logan Sargeant, Max Fewtrell is now 13.5 points adrift of the leader in the general classification, Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport).

The domination showed by the French team was enough to win its second consecutive team title prior to the final two meetings of the season.

Max Fewtrell ahead of his team mates

Sunday morning, the Group B drivers were first on track. Victor Martins got the better of Logan Sargeant with a lap of 1:56.929s. This time was then beaten in Group A, which featured the duel between Max Fewtrell and Christian Lundgaard. The Briton came out on top with a best lap of 1:56.028s, while Charles Milesi slotted in between the two.

Group B - Group A R-ace GP locked out the first two rows with Max Fewtrell, ahead of Victor Martins, Charles Milesi and Logan Sargeant. Christian Lundgaard and Yifei Ye (Josef Kaufmann Racing) shared row three. Oscar Piastri (Arden Motorsport), Thomas Neubauer (Tech 1 Racing), Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport) and Alexander Smolyar (Tech 1 Racing) completed the top ten.

Starting grid Fourth win of 2018 for the Englishman

At the start, Max Fewtrell controlled the field led by his three team mates in spite of Christian Lundgaard’s inclinations. While Raúl Guzmán (Fortec Motorsports) and Phil Hill (Anders Motorsport) had issues even before the race began, the safety car was called out at the start of lap two to allow for the removal of the car of Axel Matus (AVF by Adrián Vallés), which was damaged on the start-finish straight.

The evacuation was complicated and thus the race was stopped for ten minutes. After a lap behind the safety car the race resumed with no changes at the front of the order, but Alex Peroni (MP Motorsport) overtook Thomas Neubauer for tenth place.

The Australian then got past Lorenzo Colombo, while the French driver had to cope with the pressure coming from Thomas Maxwell (JD Motorsport) and Neil Verhagen (Tech 1 Racing). In the aftermath, Lorenzo Colombo came into the pits with front-wing damage.

Leading from start to finish, Max Fewtrell took a two-second margin of victory from Victor Martins. Charles Milesi and Logan Sargeant completed the sweep of the top four places for R-ace GP. Christian Lundgaard was fifth, followed by Yifei Ye, Oscar Piastri, Alexander Smolyar and Alex Peroni, while Thomas Neubauer held off Thomas Maxwell to finish tenth.

Race 2 -Quotes

Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP):
“This weekend, we were fast from the beginning. We kept our heads down over the three days and our work paid off. Before Budapest, I thought that it would be difficult to compete for the title, but we’re right back in the game!

We have always known that we have the potential, but we had to get rid of a bit of misfortunes. I hope that we can keep the momentum going at the last two meetings and I am really looking forward to see how it all plays out!”

Victor Martins (R-ace GP):
“It is always nice to be back on the podium. I got a good start and I was able to stay close to Max. I tried to close the gap, but he was too fast today. It is a satisfying result and I hope we can put in similar results next week. Even though I am still in the title hunt, I continue to take the races one a time. We will see where we are when it is over.”

Charles Milesi (R-ace GP):
“Since my victory at Monaco, the pace has always been there, but I haven’t been able to put it all together in qualifying. This weekend, the results were much better and I was confident in the car right from Friday morning. I think that is what has been missing, so I am thrilled!”

Thibaut de Mérindol (Team Manager, R-ace GP): “
We are delighted with this second title in a row that confirms the work that we’ve been doing for several years now. I want to thank all the women and men who work with us: the mechanics, engineers, logistics… And of course the drivers.

This year, we have had four very good drivers in the Formula Renault Eurocup. They are the basis of all of this, but we need to remain 100% focused to get the crown in the driver championship. We will do everything we can and I am sure that we have the potential.”
