World RX #11/12 – Estering, Germany 13-14.09.2018

Buxtehude – a race that has always served up plenty of drama – was a rough ride for Team PEUGEOT Total, but the squad will keep working tirelessly to capitalise on the obvious speed of the PEUGEOT 208 WRX and end the season on a high at the final round in South Africa next month.

•    Only 1 car, driven by the team’s Junior Kevin Hansen, got through to the Final in Germany, but the young Swede’s adventure came to an abrupt end when he crashed heavily on lap 3, bringing out a red flag. Conscious and moving, he was then taken to hospital for medical checks overnight. Up to that point, he had put in a brilliant performance to go through to the Final once more, with some notable getaways off the line.

•    His team mates were unlucky in Germany. After Timmy Hansen won the final qualifying heat (Q4) on Sunday in style, securing a solid top 3 position overall, he looked set to play a starring role in the Semi-Final. Unfortunately, he got caught up in a typical 1st corner battle at the tight Estering track and was forced to struggle slowly to the finish with a damaged PEUGEOT 208 WRX.

•    Underlining the reputation of rallycross as an unforgiving contact sport, Sebastien Loeb was unable to complete his Semi-Final 2, after getting a fierce push into the wall from another competitor.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE

Bruno FAMIN, PEUGEOT SPORT Director

“It’s hard to find many positive points to take out of this weekend, but it’s highlighted what we’ve known for a while: our car has speed but we’re still missing a few more details to make the elusive final step towards the very top of the podium.

A highlight here was certainly Timmy Hansen’s excellent Q4 win this morning, and also Kevin Hansen’s overall performance, which saw him challenging for the top positions in the Final from the back of the grid. Unfortunately, an accident ended the weekend on a sour note for him, but Kevin can take some comfort from his speed up to that point and we look forward to seeing him back in the car to continue his progress.

As for Timmy and Sebastien, their strong pace was clear to see when they were not caught in traffic, which was at the root of their problems this weekend, on a track that again provided few overtaking opportunities. So, we need to keep working hard to avoid putting ourselves in these sorts of situations.

It’s a very tough task, as the gaps in rallycross between all the manufacturers are incredibly close, but this is nonetheless our mission between now and the next season. As always, it’s a gradual learning process and we’ve again identified some key areas to improve.”

Kevin Hansen, PEUGEOT 208 WRX #71
6th in Buxtehude Final

“Obviously you don’t aim to finish the weekend in hospital, so today didn’t really go according to plan. Accidents are part of motorsport, so you just have to forget it quickly and move on. Up to then, things had actually been going really well.

We were generally fast throughout the weekend, and although we got caught up in traffic a few times, especially at the first corner, our progress was pretty good. I think we made some good starts; I’m proud of that. In the Final, we started on the back of the grid and got up to 3rd. So definitely a case of what might have been today. We’ll be back.”

Timmy Hansen, PEUGEOT 208 WRX Evo #21
6th in Buxtehude Semi-Final 1

"I guess you could call it another weekend of highs and lows, except there were more lows than highs. But starting on the front row of the Semi-Final, we obviously had the potential to go all the way today, yet it wasn’t to be. I’ve been around this sport for long enough to know that you have to take the rough with the smooth.

And when we have disappointing weekends like this – while still being so close to our ultimate goal – it only makes us all the more determined to succeed. I also want to say that I am very proud of my brother: he put in an incredible performance that shows exactly what he is capable of. He will come back even stronger now.”

Sébastien LOEB, PEUGEOT 208 WRX Evo #9
DNF in Buxtehude Semi-Final 2

“Until the final Qualifying session, I never had a clean run throughout the weekend, which was pretty much the story of Germany this year for me. Unfortunately, if you don't have a clean run from the beginning in rallycross, you are always catching up and this is what happened to me all weekend.

The track is quite complicated, because it does not have many overtaking opportunities, which means that it's hard to get out of the traffic. We had the potential, but if you’re stuck in the middle of the pack you can’t use it and anything can happen.

The car actually felt good this weekend, but the circumstances worked against us again. But I’m still very motivated to keep working hard with Team PEUGEOT Total, and I really look forward to what’s coming in the future.”

NEXT ROUND (#12/12): Cape Town – November 24-25

From north to south: the next and final round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, at a race that was only inaugurated last year. The stunning purpose-built track is 1.067 kilometres long, with a 60-40 asphalt to gravel split and plenty of rapid corners.

Last year, Timmy Hansen was 2nd, while the fastest lap was set at 40.393 seconds. As well as beautiful scenery and a demanding layout, the drivers can also expect warm weather: the perfect way to finish the season.
