Points finishes for Porsche entries in Blancpain GT Series Asia finale at Ningbo

15.10.2018: Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific-supported entries earned multiple points-paying finishes at the final round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia at the Ningbo International Speedpark, despite enduring a challenging weekend.

Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific-supported entries earned multiple points-paying finishes at the final round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia at the Ningbo International Speedpark, despite enduring a challenging weekend.

Qualifying for the eleventh round of the season saw Sandy Stuvik in Craft-Bamboo Racing’s #911 Porsche 911 GT3 R take a strong eighth position, while Darryl O’Young in the sister #991 entry set the 10th fastest time of the session.

In the GT4 category, TTR Team SARD’s Tony Fong Wai Shing put in the sixth fastest time aboard the #11 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR, with Keo Chang placing seventh in the Taiwan Top Speed Racing Team’s car.

A fast start for O’Young in the #991 GT3 entry saw the Hong Kong driver avoid the chaos ahead of him to run sixth at the end of the opening lap. After handing over to Aidan Read, the young Australian rejoined in seventh position, finishing ninth following a late safety car restart.

After making a similarly strong getaway in the second Craft-Bamboo car, starting driver Stuvik was forced into an early retirement after unavoidable contact on the opening lap left the Thai driver with damage.

TTR Team SARD’s #11 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR ran as high as fifth in the opening exchanges with Fong driving, but was forced to retire in the final 15 minutes in the hands of Brian Lee. Keo Chang and Masahiko Ida ran a measured performance in the Taiwan Top Speed Racing car, taking seventh position in class.

Starting Sunday’s second race from 12th position, Read made a good start in the #991 Craft-Bamboo Racing entry, before contact later on the opening lap pitched him into the barriers.

Shae Davies got the #911’s race underway from 13th position, battling fiercely on the fringes of the top-10. After handing over to team-mate Stuvik, the car’s run was ended prematurely with less than 20 minutes remaining.

The #17 GT4 entry’s race was started by Ida, placing seventh in class when the Japanese driver made his mandatory pit-stop. Chang took the car over, and charged through to fifth position by the chequered flag. The #11 TTR Team SARD car was a non-starter after its retirement from Saturday’s race.

Keo Chang, #17 Taiwan Top Speed Racing Team, said: “This season was our second competing with Porsche in the Blancpain GT Series Asia, and we’ve continued to improve in terms of the racing and how to get the most out of the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR package against an increasingly competitive field.

We’re thankful for the support that Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific has supplied to us, and I’m looking forward to continuing next year in the 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia.”

Darryl O’Young, #991 Craft-Bamboo Racing, said: “Qualifying went pretty well, we were on a good lap but unfortunately had traffic, which is a problem on this track. Luckily I got another lap in which was good enough for 10th. We managed to get past several cars and avoid incidents in the first few corners of race one.

I handed the car over to Aidan in sixth, and we eventually went on to collect some points in ninth. Unfortunately, in race two we had contact, but overall I’d like to thank the team for a great season. Everyone remained strong throughout the year with a positive attitude and now we look forward to next year.”

Alexandre Gibot, Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, said: Craft-Bamboo Racing, TTR Team SARD and Taiwan Top Speed Racing have been strong representatives of Porsche in the Blancpain GT Series Asia 2018 for the second year in a row.

Our congratulations to them on completing another hard fought campaign. Now all eyes are set on the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia in 2019, where we look forward to seeing the new Porsche 911 GT3 R join the competition, as well as the next generation of the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.”
