Rally Spain on Red Bull TV: Title rivals face their penultimate battle, plus guest contender Loeb

The three-way fight for this year’s World Rally Championship crown looks set to go down to the wire in Australia next month but before that, the protagonists face the mixed-surface challenge of Rally Spain.

Sébastien Ogier boosted the defence of his title with a superb win in Wales, bringing him to within seven points of Thierry Neuville.

Ott Tänak came down to earth with a bump (and a damaged radiator) but cannot be discounted, such is his speed of late.

Mixing it again with these three current-day greats will be the nine-time world champion Sébastien Loeb, who makes his third and final outing of the year for Citroën.

Rally Spain: Taking the rough with the smooth

* Rally Spain might be based in the coastal resort of Salou, not far from Barcelona, but there’s no time for a holiday for either the drivers or the teams, who must deal with the challenges of the WRC’s only true mixed-surface event.

* The first full day of the rally takes place on gravel, with medium-speed stages similar in nature to those that the crews already faced in neighbouring Portugal earlier in the season.

* Then it is onto asphalt for the final two days. Specifically, it’s super-smooth asphalt, the thing that this rally is most famous for. The drivers love it and say it’s the closest thing that they get to driving on a racing circuit. But it can take some getting used to when you’re switching from gravel.

* Before the cars take to asphalt, the teams must convert the cars from gravel specification within a 75-minute service on Friday evening.

* The rally actually begins on asphalt on Thursday evening, with a spectator-friendly stage in Barcelona in the Montjuic area that used to hold Spain’s Formula 1 race.

Two pairs of Spanish expert eyes: Luis Moya and Laia Sanz join the Red Bull TV coverage

Red Bull TV will again have the perfect man to guide you through all of the twists and turns of Rally Spain: expert commentator Luis Moya. The Spaniard was co-driver to his compatriot Carlos Sainz during the peak of his career, winning the world championship in 1990 and 1992, as well as Rally Spain twice.

Also joining the coverage as a guest of honour will be two-wheeled rally raid star Laia Sanz, a 13-time women’s world time trial champion and the only woman to finish inside the top 10 of the motorbike class on the Dakar Rally.

Catch up on the latest transfer news

In addition to whatever goes on on the stages, the discussion of the service park is bound to be dominated by the latest news regarding driver movements for 2019. In recent weeks we have had Thierry Neuville commit his future to Hyundai and the announcement that Sébastien Ogier is going to return to his first team Citroën, where he was until the end of 2011.

This week came news that Ogier will be joined at the French manufacturer by Esapekka Lappi, with Toyota responding by recruiting Kris Meeke to join Ott Tänak and Jari-Matti Latvala in a team of proven winners. Tune in during the weekend to hear was Luis thinks of all that, and of what’s still to come.

And if you need a quick review of what happened so far, check in with Mike Chen and Matthew Wilson as they discuss the trials the drivers faced at Rally GB, how the drivers have been doing so far this season and what to expect for Rally de España!
