Max Fewtrell fastest in Barcelona Formula Renault collective tests

Max Fewtrell fastest in Barcelona Formula Renault collective tests

19.10.2018: Formula Renault Eurocup leader Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP) was quickest in the collective tests at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday.

Formula Renault Eurocup leader Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP) was quickest in the collective tests at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday.

With a lap of 1:42.095s, the British driver of the Renault Sport Academy led from Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport) and Logan Sargeant (R-ace GP). Rookie Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport) was fastest in the afternoon session that ended prematurely.

On Wednesday, the field began its week with four hours of testing. Winner of the last three races, Max Fewtrell posted the best time of 1:42.315s ahead of seven rookies led by Lorenzo Colombo and Christian Lundgaard.

Results Max Fewtrell close to the track record

On Friday morning, the field went out for the first collective test session. Logan Sargeant, Yifei Ye (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Max Fewtrell were the first to take the initiative before Thomas Maxwell (JD Motorsport) and Yifei Ye took turns atop the timing screen.

Logan Sargeant began the final sprint with six minutes remaining on the clock, but Max Fewtrell took over with a time of 1:42.095s, close to the track record set by Robert Shwartzman last year in 1:41.974s. The English driver’s effort was enough to lead from Lorenzo Colombo, Logan Sargeant, Victor Martins (R-ace GP) and Yifei Ye.

Collective tests 1 Christian Lundgaard prior to the red flag

The conditions were much warmer with stronger winds in the afternoon. After a hard-fought start to the session, Lorenzo Colombo and Christian Lundgaard swapped the top spot, with the Dane getting the nod.

The duel looked to continue on in the final ten minutes, but the red flag was waved following the incident of Freek Schothorst (MP Motorsport). While the Dutch driver escaped uninjured, the session ended prematurely. Christian Lundgaard was quickest with a time of 1:43.383s. Lorenzo Colombo was next, followed by Oscar Piastri (Arden Motorsport), Neil Verhagen (Tech 1 Racing) and Thomas Maxwell.

Collective tests 2 On Saturday, the first qualifying session will start at 9:00 and race one will begin at 12:45.

Quotes

Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP):
“The title is in sight and this is a perfect start to the weekend. We had the chance to show that we are still on top and the team has just delivered again today. Tomorrow, my goal will be quite simple: first I have to be as fast as I can be in my qualifying group before finishing as high as possible in the race!”

Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport):
“On Wednesday, we had a pretty good set up with our first set of tyres, but we went too far in this direction. We tried something new this morning. It didn’t really work on the team’s cars, but we were able to analyze the data to understand and correct that.

I would have liked to have seen the classification had the session run to its completion, but that’s the way it goes. I can’t really say that I am confident for tomorrow, but I am not worried either. My rivals are very fast, I have a gap to make up so I just have to win both races… Everything else is out of our control!”

Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport): “
I am confident, because I know this track. Last year, Renault Sport invited me to the rookie tests and I was fast in my very first laps in a Formula Renault. This experience allowed me to be at the same level as my rivals and we have been among the fastest since Wednesday.

Because of the red flag today, we don’t really know what our margin of progress is on new tyres. We just have to work hard and improve the settings to adapt to the wind. In any case, I think we can do better to be well placed on the grid tomorrow!”
