Maxime Potty: “Not the same as I was six months ago”

The seventh and last TCR Europe event, this weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, was not up to Maxime Potty’s expectations. Twice, the 18-year-old driver took to the gravel, having been pushed off the track by the actions of others.

Placed 14th on Saturday and 16th on Sunday, the representative of the Belgian VW Club did not score the points expected ... For his first season at this level, he nevertheless finished in a creditable 8th place in the European Championship. He is also runner-up in TCR Benelux, a competition for drivers and teams from the Low Countries which included five of the seven European races.

“We should not deceive ourselves; it is not the end to the season we had hoped for,” admits Maxime. "With Comtoyou Racing, we never quite managed to master the settings so as to give me total confidence. I had to fight at the wheel of my Golf GTI TCR because it simply did not respond in the way I would have preferred. And when you cannot get to grips with the car, it is not easy to complete the perfect lap ...”

Once again, it was qualifying practice which set the tone for the remainder of the weekend. “I recorded 14th fastest time," said the resident of Hamoir. "I was less than nine tenths of a second from pole position, but at this level that is already far too much. I would have had to find two tenths to reach the second part of qualification ...

But instead I had to start twice from the 7th row on the grid, in the middle of the pack. And, inevitably, the risk of collision is greater ... "

In the first race, while aiming for a place in the Top 10, Maxime was touched early in the race by Stian Paulsen in the last corner and he had to drive through the gravel run-off. The result was a 14th place at the chequered flag.

Sunday was worse. "I made a great start," he says. "I took the first three corners alongside Jean-Karl Vernay. But in the fourth corner, he himself was hit by another car and drove into mine ... and I had to cross the gravel again. Falling down to 24th, I then managed to climb back to take 16th.

Although this final event was certainly disappointing, it should not be allowed to conceal the good times during a most educational season. Eighth in TCR Europe, Maxime has finished three times (in seven events) in the Top 5 in qualifying, with a second place his best result. He also finished in the points seven times, culminating with podium finishes (2nd and 3rd places) at Spa-Francorchamps.

And, above all, he has developed enormously! "I am clearly not the same driver as I was six months ago," he says. "I have learned so much this year! Whether in the pack, concentrating on car development, and making the tyres work to the optimum ... I think I have shown my worth, when everything has been working well, and I have proved that I have my place at this level. But we had too many complicated weekends ...

Clearly, it was regularity that we missed most! Is it a lack of experience? Perhaps ...  but we will certainly be working hard to prepare for 2019! In the meantime, I would like to thank the Belgian VW Club and Comtoyou Racing for their support this season. Now, let us look to the future!”
