Porsche Endurance Trophy joins 2018/19 Asian Le Mans Series for Shanghai opener

22.11.2018: Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, with support from Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, has joined the Asian Le Mans Series to create the Porsche Endurance Trophy for this weekend’s Agile 4 Hours of Shanghai.

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, with support from Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, has joined the Asian Le Mans Series to create the Porsche Endurance Trophy for this weekend’s Agile 4 Hours of Shanghai.

The one-off event will be contested by existing Porsche Carrera Cup Asia teams and drivers, which were in Shanghai last weekend for the season finale, and will run alongside the existing GT Cup class.

Four teams have signed up, with Earl Bamber Motorsport, OpenRoad Racing, EKS Motorsports and Modena Motorsports set to run eight drivers between them, utilising the same Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars used in the 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season.

The Porsche Endurance Trophy offers teams a unique opportunity to compete in an ACO-organised endurance race, with their own podium ceremony to be held separately from the GT Cup’s celebrations.

Driving for two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Earl Bamber’s outfit is 2017/18 Asian Le Mans Series GT Cup class champion Graeme Dowsett and Thailand Super Series competitor Jeffrey Chiang.

Porsche China Junior Daniel Lu, who finished seventh in his debut PCCA campaign, will be in action for EKS Motorsports, with Li Jiaqi and Pro-Am champion Bao Jinlong also racing for the Malaysian outfit.

The OpenRoad Racing entry will field Carrera Cup Asia Pro-Am runner-up Francis Tjia, with Modena Motorsports set to run Benny Simonsen and Philippe Descombes.

In addition, the Agile 4 Hours of Shanghai will feature a Porsche 911 and Panamera Sport Turismo as the official safety cars, further highlighting the importance of this new partnership between the Asian Le Mans Series and Porsche China.

Cyrille Taesch-Wahlen, Managing Director of the Asian Le Mans Series, said:
“Porsche has a long history with the ACO, and we are really pleased to extend this relationship into the region. We are excited to be able to offer Porsche Carrera Cup Asia teams and drivers the opportunity to race in an endurance event alongside the Asian Le Mans Series field, in their home country.

“The GT category is important to our series, and to the ACO’s philosophy of multi-class racing. We are looking forward to seeing the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars adding to the exciting on-track action.”

Alexandre Gibot, Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, added
: “We are pleased to offer this unique opportunity for our Porsche customers to race as part of the Asian Le Mans Series’ four-hour endurance race in their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars. We hope that this is the start of a growing racing programme in the championship for our Porsche customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region.”
