Dakar Rally 2019
stage 2 Pisco – San Juan de Marcona
Total distance: 553 km – transfer section: 211 km, timed section: 342 km
Tuesday, January 8th 2019

07:45 Peterhansel at a standstill for 20 minutes!

Stéphane Peterhansel is in danger of big losses. The Mini driver has just spent more than 20 minutes at a standstill after 109 kilometres of the special, which he was leading at the time. A crushing blow for ‘Mister Dakar’!

07:34 Peterhansel moves up a gear

Stéphane Peterhansel is on form today. The Mini driver has moved into the lead after 100 km of the special, 22 seconds ahead of Sébastien Loeb, who is also putting in a fine performance. Giniel de Villiers has dropped down to 3rd position.

07:30 An inspiring story

Jacques Barrón has reached the start of the special. The Peruvian is taking part in his first Dakar accompanied by his son Lucas, the first co-pilot with Down’s syndrome to take part in the Dakar!

07:22 De Villiers takes the lead

Giniel de Villiers may steal the limelight from his team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah today. The South African has reached CP1 with the best time, but only a few seconds in front of Stéphane Peterhansel and Sébastien Loeb. Al-attiyah and Carlos Sainz lag behind by respectively 3 and 4 minutes.

07:11 A family affair

Fernando Ferrand Malatesta and Fernando Ferrand Del Busto are taking part in their ninth Dakar as a father and son team and have not yet had to withdraw from the race prematurely. The Peruvian duo have just started the special and are hoping this year in front of their home crowds to improve on core their 25th place of last year.

07:07 Things are looking up for Loeb

Sébastien Loeb seems to be in better form than yesterday. The Peugeot driver has reached WP1 only 4 seconds behind Carlos Sainz!

07:01 Przygonski lags behind

The day’s start has been difficult for Jakub Przygonski who has ground to a halt several times over the first kilometres of the special. The Polish driver, 3rd yesterday, has already lost more than 5 minutes to Carlos Sainz at WP1.

06:50 Sainz sets the time to beat

Carlos Sainz has taken advantage of his beneficial position behind Nasser Al-Attiyah to enjoy an excellent start to the special. The Mini driver currently boasts the best time after 50 kilometres, but only by two seconds in front of Giniel De Villiers.

06:38 Fuchs seeks to shine

Nicolás Fuchs has also started the special. The Peruvian, who finished 12th on his first Dakar and showed plenty of promise last year, is shouldering the hopes of an entire country. On a route that he knows well, the Proto driver is aiming for a top 10 finish today, following his 15th place during the first stage yesterday.

06:06 Starts every 3 minutes

Carlos Sainz, Jakub Przygonski, Vladimir Vasilyev and Yazeed Al Rajhi have also begun the special, each driver separated by 3 minutes. Giniel de Villiers is the next to start, followed by Stéphane Peterhansel who will be looking to regain ground today.
