Patricio O’Ward Finishes 8th at Home Grand Prix

25.03.2019: Patricio O’Ward finished in 8th place after putting on a Texas-sized show at his 2019 NTT IndyCar Series debut this afternoon at Circuit of The Americas.

Patricio O’Ward finished in 8th place after putting on a Texas-sized show at his 2019 NTT IndyCar Series debut this afternoon at Circuit of The Americas.

Despite missing the two days of testing during spring training at Circuit of The Americas, O’Ward was able to dial in his No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet enough to qualify in 8th place, narrowly missing the Firestone Fast Six portion of qualifying. The result marked O’Ward’s second top ten qualifying result after his IndyCar debut in Sonoma late last year.

With hundreds of dedicated fans in the stands sporting “Patricio O’Ward” t-shirts, hats, and even sombrero’s, O’Ward started the second race of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series in grand fashion. The nineteen-year-old had a dominant start and a clean path through Turn 1 and was able to move from 8th to 6th on the first lap.

Running a slightly different strategy compared to the rest of the field, O’Ward spent the majority of the race in the top ten and making it as high as 5th place. Some notable passes came when O’Ward overtook fellow rookie, Felix Rosenqvist on lap 21 and series veteran James Hinchcliffe just eight laps later.

A yellow flag blanketed the field on lap 44 after contact between Hinchcliffe and Rosenqvist resulted in the Chip Ganassi Racing driver suffering significant damage and partially blocking the pit-lane entrance. The caution forced O’Ward to concentrate on saving fuel and lasted a total of six laps.

O’Ward had a clean restart and ran in 5th place through Turn 1. Later in the lap, O’Ward was passed by Sebastian Bourdais and shifted his focus to running the remaining six laps mistake free. With two laps to go, the struggle to conserve fuel became a major hindrance and allowed Marco Andretti and Takuma Sato to pass O’Ward. Crossing the finish line in 8th place, O’Ward captured his second top ten finish of his IndyCar career after finishing in 9th at Sonoma Raceway in 2018.

The next round of the NTT IndyCar Series race, the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, will take place at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday, April 7. Live coverage begins at 3 p.m. CST on NBCSN and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.

Patricio O’Ward, No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet

“I think it was a pretty good race for us. We ended exactly where we started (eighth) and didn’t go backward, so I’d say that was a successful day. We ran a pretty clean race, and we were right on pace, but after that yellow came out, we needed one more lap under yellow to be able to push as hard as we wanted to.

I was having to save a lot of fuel to make it to the end, so it was just impossible to keep Marco and Takuma behind me coming full power. I know the No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet had a top-five finish in it today and even though we couldn’t make it happen, it’s nice to know that we have the pace and can be fighting up front with the veteran drivers. Huge congrats to Colton. I’m really happy for him – I know this means a lot to him.”
