An expanded 19-strong entry featuring some of rallying’s most exciting young talents has been assembled for this week’s Rally Islas Canarias with drivers building their experience on the all-asphalt stages following the gravel-based season opener in the Azores last month.

Canary Islander Emma Falcón is making her ERC1 Junior debut, while Pepe López returns to the category for young stars in R5 cars having impressed during a stint with the Peugeot Rally Academy in 2017. The Spanish drivers will be armed with Citroën’s C3 R5. Title leader Chris Ingram, Team OSCARO’s Pierre-Louis Loubet and former powerlifter turned rally prospect and Rally Islas Canarias rookie Alexandros Tsouloftas will also challenge for ERC1 Junior success.

The Pirelli-supported ERC3 Junior category welcomes newcomers Jean-Baptiste Franceschi, Grigor Grigorov and Nabila Tejpar with Tejpar due to formally announce her plans for 2019 in due course.

Miika Hokkanen makes his first start of 2019 in the R2 class as he continues his recovery from an operation on a shoulder injury during the winter. Category regular Kristóf Klausz is also back on ERC3 Junior duty, while Roland Stengg has a replacement Opel ADAM R2 at his disposal following a crash testing in the Azores, which prevented him from starting the island rally.

Like Franceschi, Grigorov, Klausz and Tejpar, FPAK-backed Pedro Antunes, Sindre Furuseth, ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team pair Elias Lundberg and Grégoire Munster, Roman Schwedt and ACCR-supported Jan Talaš are all new to the event, which features 16 Tarmac-only stages over a timed distance of 200.98 kilometres.

Rally Team Spain’s championship leader Efrén Llarena and Stengg Motorsport’s Simon Wagner both took part on the event for the first time last year. While Llarena crashed fighting for the lead, Wagner took his first ERC3 Junior podium.

Action begins with Free Practice and the Qualifying Stage on 2 May followed by two days of action. And this is what the ERC Junior drivers have had to say ahead of the second event of the season.

Emma Falcón (ESP) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Eduardo González (ESP) Team: Escuderia Fuertwagen Motorsport Car: Citroën C3 R5

“Rally Islas Canarias is my favourite one, of course, as it’s my home event. To run on your home rally gives you a plus and I want to do a good rally because of this. My main goal will be to finish because I don’t have enough kilometres in the car and it’s very different to my previous cars. I want to improve and get used to it, trying to make the gap with the rest of the ERC1 Junior drivers as short as possible. I am working hard to be on Rally di Roma Capitale with this car, too.”

Chris Ingram (GBR) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Ross Whittock (GBR) Team: Toksport WRT Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to continue our championship challenge despite the fact we are still searching for the investment and sponsorship required for our 2019 ERC title aims.  I haven't driven a rally car on Tarmac for nine months so It will be critical for me to get some seat time and find a good set-up on the Monday test. I won the ERC Juniors in 2017 on my first visit to the Island so I know how I need to approach the stages, plus myself Ross Whittock, my co-driver, and the Toksport team are working very well together. But the main thing for me will be getting behind the wheel and getting a good feeling with the ŠKODA Fabia R5 again. We hope to build on our championship position in both the ERC overall standings and ERC1 Junior, which we lead.”

Pepe López (ESP) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Borja Rozada (ESP) Team: Citroën Rally Team Car: Citroën C3 R5

“Of course I will try to fight for the Spanish title but as we are competing in the ERC we keep in mind to keep a strong position because it could be really interesting. The car is really competitive and I am really happy with the car and all the parts. It’s working well and I thank Citroën Racing. Last year was really tough because I had to wait a lot to be in the car. But I am proud to be again with a good programme and I will do my best with this opportunity. For all rallies I start with the objective of trying to win and it will be no different here.”

Pierre-Louis Loubet (FRA) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Vincent Landais (FRA) Team: 2C Compétition Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“My target is to be as close to the podium as possible after the disaster in Corsica and get back the confidence. Rally Islas Canarias is not really a difficult rally but it’s important to keep the speed up for the long, fast corners. We know the car has good potential on Tarmac but it was difficult in Corscia because we didn’t always go the right way with the set-up at the right time. I think after this rally I will be able to tell better how the car can be for me on Tarmac.”

Alexandros Tsouloftas (CYP) ERC1 Junior
Co-driver: Antonis Chrysostomou (CYP) Team: Toksport WRT Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I have never driven a Tarmac-spec rally car nor a Tarmac rally, it’s my first non-gravel experience! We have no Tarmac races in Cyprus, thus no experience. But I am super-excited and can’t wait. I believe Rally Islas Canarias is the perfect event with wide sections, slow sections, fast sections and twisty areas. It is surely the ultimate experience for starting on Tarmac. Our ultimate goal is to finish the race, get as much experience as possible and, of course, try to keep the second place in ERC1 Junior. My first kilometers will be this Monday during the official test.”

Pedro Antunes (PRT) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Paulo Lopes (PRT) Team: FPAK Portugal Team ERC Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“It’s my first time on this rally but it looks really nice and I think the roads will be nice to drive. I understand it’s a tough rally for the tyres with the hard Tarmac and the hot weather. Although everything will be new for us and I want to do a nice fight and try to be on the podium. My reference on Tarmac last year was always Diogo Gago and we had some nice fights. Although Rally Islas Canarias is a new rally for me, lots of ERC Junior drivers have done the rally before.”

Jean-Baptiste Franceschi (FRA) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Anthony Gorguilo (FRA) Car: Ford Fiesta R2T

“I have been given this opportunity by M-Sport Poland and my sponsors following last year’s cooperation. It’s an interesting championship for young drivers and, like all drivers, we have one target to aim for. Historically ERC Junior has always been very strong on Rally Islas Canarias. I’m sure on top of the drivers we have seen in Azores, we will see some fast Spanish drivers who know the stages and specification of the rally. I don’t expect it will be an easy fight in Gran Canaria.”

Sindre Furuseth (NOR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Jim Hjerpe (SWE) Team: Saintéloc Junior Team Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I’ve had a good look at the onboard footage of the stages provided by the organiser, just to get the overall understanding of the stages. From there I have already an idea on how I want my pacenotes to be and what to focus on during the recce. The test will be important in finding the right set-up for those stages. Traditionally we have been quick on smooth and flowing Tarmac roads, so if we can put this package together, I am confident we will be in the fight for the win.”

Grigor Grigorov (BGR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Yanaki Yanakiev (BGR) Team: Grigorov Racing Team – Enekod Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“ERC Junior is the right way to the big stage. There is lots of competition and mass media coverage so what more can a newcomer on the European scene want? It is no secret that each pilot is involved with a desire to win, but since this is a new challenge for me of a very different nature, I have to be honest with myself and my team and we will set ourselves real goals to pursue throughout the year. For this season, our main goal is to enter the championship and show a steady, safe pace as with every mileage we cover, we will improve our overall performance and gain experience and impressions for the 2020 season.”

Miika Hokkanen (FIN) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Rami Suorsa (FIN) Team: Mavisa Sport Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“It’s been a big push to get my [injured] shoulder to rally condition [following my operation]. At the moment I don’t know if it will work or not. We will find it out in Canarias. Last year was my first season in ERC, a logical step from the Finnish championship. But I don’t think it was a strong debut season, hopefully we can make this one better. We got two podiums in the last two races. But the opponents are strong so we really need to be in a top form to make good results. It’s always a pleasure to race against hard competition. There are many drivers who will be fighting for the top places this year.”

Kristóf Klausz (HUN) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Ágnes Farnadi (HUN) Team: Klaus Motorsport Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I have not raced in the Canary Islands before but I like the fast roads and many corners. We expect tyre tactics will have a big influence on the final result. The videos that have been uploaded by the organisers are a great help for me. I have tried to prepare by learning from those videos and also reading about the race from different sources. I have also tried to gain knowledge from previous experiences by other drivers. I expect big fights this season, but we have the target so we try to build up our progression process accordingly to achieve our goal.”

Efrén Llarena (ESP) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Sara Fernández (ESP) Team: Rally Team Spain Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“Technically Rally Islas Canarias is not my home rally because I did it only last year for the first time. But we have some experience and we will try to do our best. We did the Azores, one of the most difficult rallies in Europe, without any big mistakes. We had a strategy to be fast but not at a crazy speed, to be clean. The strategy worked so we were very happy with our victory. It was also the first rally with our new car that we built so it felt amazing.”

Elias Lundberg (SWE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: David Arhusiander (SWE) Team: ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team Car: Opel ADAM R2

“Me and my co-driver David were really happy with our ERC debut in the Azores. It was a great feeling to end up on the podium after such a tough rally. But now we’re facing a different challenge. Tackling the smooth Tarmac roads of Rally Islas Canarias in our ADAM R2 will be really fun. It’s a new challenge for me as I have quite limited experience on Tarmac from last year’s ADAC Opel Rallye Cup. From what I’ve seen it looks quite close to racing and a good line technique is going to be key. The ADAM R2 has proved to be extremely competitive on Tarmac and my team is going to help me to become fast. It will be interesting to see if we’re competitive on Tarmac against these really fast drivers in ERC3 Junior.”

Grégoire Munster (BEL) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Louis Louka (BEL) Team: ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team Car: Opel ADAM R2

“I had quite a big accident on the TAC Rally recently. My co-driver Louis and I both suffered a light concussion. We decided to compete in the Rallye de Wallonie to get back a proper feeling with the car in preparation of our main target in Gran Canaria. The asphalt rallies generally suit me more than the gravel events because of my lack of experience on loose surfaces. Still, Rally Islas Canarias will be a real challenge for me because of the high grip level the stages offer. Belgian roads are mostly slippery so I will need to adapt my driving style to these conditions after Rallye de Wallonie. We have busy days ahead, but we are ready for the challenge. I can’t wait to step back into our ADAM R2.”

Roman Schwedt (DEU) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Lina Meter (DEU) Team: Team ROMO Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“My first target is to have a good test result and get a good feeling after a not-so-good start to the season in the Azores. Then I want to push on some stages and have good times, but I must find a good rhythm on the stages and with the car, then I will be happy. I did karting in Germany and Italy earlier in my career and I want to use some of my experiences from this, like taking a clean line in every corner, being fast but also being careful with the car in the line. I hope I can do this.”

Roland Stengg (AUT) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Alessandra Baumann (DEU) Team: Stengg Motorsport Car: Opel ADAM R2

“We have a new car, we have rented from Germany because our car from the Azores will not drive anymore, it’s completely done [following the accident]. We’re building up one with parts from an old damaged car and hopefully that will be ready for Rally Liepāja. I still have some pain in my knee but Alessandra is fine now. We know we’ll face strong field in Canarias, really strong drivers. It would just be good to get to the finish because it’s difficult to come back into the rhythm. We only did a few metres in the Azores and that’s not enough after eight months. I did a small rally in Germany recently, it was good to come back but it felt weird.”

Jan Talaš (CZE) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Ondřej Krajča (CZE) Team: ACCR Czech Rally Team I Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“We are really looking forward to Rally Islas Canarias and we would like to fight for better positions than on Azores. I am more comfortable and experienced on Tarmac, so we can be more successful.”

Nabila Tejpar (GBR) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Max Freeman (GBR) Car: Peugeot 208 R2

“I’ve been competing in the Peugeot Cup and things like that but I’ve never come across to the ERC before and it’s going to be a good experience to see what the differences are and it’s good competition. I’ve competed against some of the drivers before and I’ve had good pace against them. I’ve been looking at YouTube and it looks quite fast in places but twisty in places as well with smooth Tarmac. It will be a challenge because I’ve never been to any of the islands to rally and I know a lot of the competition has been to the island before. I know I will have to make sure I’ve done an extremely good recce but the main thing is to build my experience in what will be a strong category.”

Simon Wagner (AUT) ERC3 Junior
Co-driver: Gerald Winter (AUT) Team: Stengg Motorsport Car: Opel ADAM R2

“I never drove the Opel ADAM on Tarmac so it is going to be difficult, but we definitely want to top our third place from last year. After our broken suspension at the Azores we were really disappointed but now we need good points on Canarias and Tarmac is the surface we know best. After the Azores we were able to drive in the third round of the Austrian championship with the ŠKODA Fabia R5. After a bad first, rainy day with the wrong tyres we won the second day ahead of my brother Julian in the BRR Fabia, Hermann Neubauer and Niki Mayr-Melnhof.”
