Mercedes-AMG GT3 Entries Secure Two Podium Finishes in VIR Blancpain GT World Challenge America Races

Murillo Racing and Matt Fassnacht Sweep Pirelli GT4 America Races at VIRginia International Raceway in No. 53 Mercedes-AMG GT4

The Murillo Racing team and driver Matt Fassnacht won both Pirelli GT4 America races at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) last weekend, giving the Mercedes-AMG GT4 its first double sweep in North American competition.

In addition to Fassnacht’s winning weekend in the No. 53 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4, DXDT Racing earned a pair of podium finishes with its Mercedes-AMG GT3 entries in the VIR weekend’s Blancpain GT World Challenge America races.

Fassnacht is a GT4 Am driver, but that did not stop him from competing with and ultimately beating several professional drivers in both the Saturday and Sunday 50-minute GT4 Sprint races on the 3.27-mile VIR road course.

The key to victory was clean driving by Fassnacht and the long-run consistency of the Mercedes-AMG GT4. Fassnacht steered clear of the curbing around the VIR road course, which was the likely cause of tire punctures for several top competitors in both races.

The performance of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 supported Fassnacht through the late stages of each race, allowing him to open up a comfortable lead while still managing the No. 53’s tires.

In the VIR weekend’s twin 90-minute Blancpain GT World Challenge America races, DXDT Racing scored a podium each day with its Mercedes-AMG GT3 Pro-Am entries.

Rebounding from an accident early in March’s season-opening race weekend at Circuit of The Americas, David Askew and Ryan Dalziel co-drove the No. 63 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 to a third-place Pro-Am finish in Saturday’s first race.

In Sunday’s second and final race, George Kurtz and Colin Braun brought the No. 04 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 across the finish line in second place in Pro-Am.

The double podium finishes for DXDT came in the team’s second race weekend with its expanded two-car Mercedes-AMG GT3 team.

Previously run under the Pirelli World Challenge banner, Blancpain GT World Challenge America features classes for both professional and professional-amateur driving duos in GT3 cars. The new Pirelli GT4 America series follows a similar format for competitors, in addition to the single-driver sprint series, in GT4 vehicles.

Next up for both Blancpain GT World Challenge America and Pirelli GT4 America is the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park race weekend, May 17 – 19.

Matt Fassnacht, Driver – No. 53 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4:
“It was an epically incredible weekend. I had been looking for a chance to run up against some of the really good drivers. It’s great to get the wins, but I really do this for the fun of racing, and I was learning so much racing with these guys. It was extremely manageable how much car we wanted to use up. I could dial it up and dial it back when I needed to strategically in the race. It was just a matter of managing the back tires. The Mercedes-AMG GT4 just has so much great torque coming out of the turns, it’s fantastic, but you have to be super careful with it. The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is a great car over the long run and VIR is a particularly good track for the car, probably one of the best I would think.”

David Askew, Driver – No. 63 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“We put the incident at COTA behind us and moved forward. We got back on the track, our Mercedes-AMG GT3 was just like new and a test at VIR the week before the race helped a lot. Both DXDT cars unloaded well, they had pace and were competitive and the drivers were competitive. I qualified well for the first race but unfortunately didn’t execute well in the first couple of laps. I got myself buried deep but just hung in there and we got lucky with a caution. I was able to pack back up, gave the car to Ryan, and he was able to get it on the podium.”

Ryan Dalziel, Driver – No. 63 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“The DXDT Racing guys have pretty much been working flat out, built a new car, and it was great to have a reliable weekend with no issues. We definitely felt like we had a good long-distance car and we proved that in Saturday’s race. Despite some setbacks in David’s stint, we had the pace to come back through and score a Pro-Am podium and sixth place overall. Ultimately, a good weekend for the team, we had a podium both days, and we will just keep putting it together and head to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park looking for a double podium.”

George Kurtz, Driver – No. 04 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“We had a great weekend at VIR. Colin and I had a good first race and were in a position for a podium finish, but we got shuffled back a little bit in the restart. We bounced back Sunday with a strong second-place finish. Colin did a fantastic job bringing it home. Big thanks to the DXDT team and crew. We had a great Mercedes-AMG GT3 and a great result for the weekend!”

Colin Braun, Driver – No. 04 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3:
“Saturday didn’t quite go how we wanted. George and I had a podium run going then on the last restart I got moved out of the way by a lapped car. Sunday was a much better day.

I was able to bring the car to George in second and he finished a great drive to bring home a second-place finish in class. We continue to learn more and more about the Mercedes-AMG GT3. I’m really proud of George and everyone at DXDT Racing for executing a solid race. I hope this starts a streak!”
