Gael Castelli's first win !

05.10.2008: Gael Castelli's first win !

NOGARO (7/8) – October 4-5, 2008 RACE 1

He’s only just turned 18 years old, but Gaël Castelli scored a majestic first win in the THP Spider Cup this afternoon at Nogaro, after an incredible solo drive. Julien Briché and David Pouget joined him on the podium. As for Grégory Guilvert, he was forced to start from the back of the grid after experiencing serious gearbox problems in practice, but climbed back to 4th place and extended his championship lead. With just three races to go this season, it’s getting tense for everybody…

The competitors in the THP Spider Cup met this weekend at Nogaro in the Gers region of France, for the penultimate round of the championship ahead of the finals at Dijon on 7-8 November. Following the conclusion of the Le Mans Series, the Cup is now supporting another major international championship, the FIA GT.

Qualifying was notable for the fact that all the leaders experienced difficulties. Grégory Guilvert was unable to complete a single timed lap owing to repeated gearbox problems, and was forced to start from the last row of the grid. Julien Briché, and indeed Marlène Broggi, complained of down-on-power engines – the cause was quickly found to be a failure in the turbo wastegate control pipe. It all meant Alexandre Rambure claimed pole position, ahead of the two Julien’s, Briché and Beltoise; followed by Gaël Castelli and David Pouget. Title contender Simon Moulton was making his first visit to the track, and set sixth-fastest time.

After qualifying, Team Fillatre was informed of its exclusion from the meeting. This was because of technical irregularities, and a failure to comply with the regulations on engine seals. Under cloudy Saturday skies but in completely dry conditions, the THP Spider Cup completed a first, crazy 16-lap race. In the opening laps, three different men led the field: first, pole sitter Alexandre Rambure; then Julien Briché; and finally Gaël Castelli, who seized the position on the 3rd lap and didn’t relinquish it until the chequered flag.

His maturity throughout the race surprised onlookers, and he gave no sign of cracking under the pressure from Julien Briché; today’s drive demonstrated Gaël Castelli’s potential, and gave proof of his ability to win races, in his first season, ahead of the category’s strongest drivers. Having only just turned 18, Gaël is already beginning to live up to his promise.Julien Briché claimed second position.

After several unsuccessful attempts to unsettle Gaël Castelli, the JSB driver claimed valuable championship points. While the fight for the top two spots was clear-cut, third place was hotly disputed. Alexandre Rambure and Julien Beltoise battled throughout the race – and collided on the penultimate lap. David Pouget, who had been following close behind, took advantage of the situation to claim third place.

Grégory Guilvert’s performance was also worth a mention in dispatches: starting from the back of the grid, he climbed back to 4th place! He attacked from start to finish, repeatedly improving his fastest race lap; and the championship leader finished just ahead of his nearest title rival, Simon Moulton.

Tomorrow’s race will bring the next instalment…

Gaël Castelli: "I’m delighted, I really didn’t expect to win. It’s a great achievement for me. I couldn’t believe it at first… I could see my friend Julien Briché behind me and he wasn’t closing, but I still didn’t dare think about it… I’m just thrilled. The car was brilliant!"

Julien Briché: "I made a good start but only managed to lead for a lap… Gaël caught me very quickly and attacked at the start of the straight. He was a bit faster than me. I tried to keep pace with him but it was very difficult. I’d like to congratulate Gaël on winning a race in his first season. He’s a very quick guy, and he won fair and square!"

David Pouget: "It was a tough race. I spent a large part of it following Alexandre Rambure and Julien Beltoise. I made a few mistakes but in the end, Julien got his braking wrong and hit Alex – so I finished in third place. After a difficult start to the year, I’m enjoying my first podium of the season!"
