Patricio O’Ward Finishes 11th After Another Dramatic Day in Detroit

03.06.2019: Patricio O’Ward finished in an impressive 11th place in the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear yesterday after being involved in a five-car incident on Lap 1.

Patricio O’Ward finished in an impressive 11th place in the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear yesterday after being involved in a five-car incident on Lap 1.

O’Ward almost duplicated his NTT IndyCar qualifying result from the day before and started from 8th place on the grid after being the second fastest Chevrolet behind polesitter and Race 1 winner, Josef Newgarden. With superb weather conditions and confidence from the work done on the No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet, O’Ward went into Race 2 knowing there would be some great racing.

Lap 1 set the tone for the dramatic 70 lap race when Will Power made a move that resulted in squeezing Felix Rosenqvist who then tapped O’Ward into a spin that led Tony Kanaan and Matheus Leist to T-bone the No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet. The 20-year-old was able to make his way back into the pits under yellow where the Carlin crew replaced the front wing and throw on some fresh tires. O’Ward returned to the field a lap down in 20th place.

Various strategies across the field caused several position changes throughout the remaining cars on track before the next full course yellow came out on Lap 15 involving an incident between Sebastien Bourdais and Spencer Pigot. The yellow marked the pursuit of getting back onto the lead lap for O’Ward and spent several laps with Scott Dixon in his mirrors but ultimately kept the five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion behind him and moved up to 18th when the green flag waved.

Another yellow flag came out shortly after the green when Newgarden and James Hinchcliffe became tangled in Turn 3. Now in 16th place on the restart, O’Ward finally made his way back onto the lead lap with 20 laps to go. It wasn’t until another yellow flag with 17 laps remaining came out that O’Ward was able to catch up to the rest of the field and put himself in a spot where he could properly fight for positions.

The field went back to green with 12 laps remaining and O’Ward was able to make it up to 13th before Rosenqvist caused a red flag with 6 laps to go. The remaining competitors were sent to the pits and by the time the race was back to green there were only 3 laps left of the 70-lap event. O’Ward left it all on track and made his final pass around Colton Herta to claim 11th place before crossing the finish line.

PATRICIO O'WARD (No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet):

“I’m proud of our race today and how strong we were able to come back after such a bad start on the first lap that put us at the back of the field a lap down. We were really close to avoiding that first lap incident, but unfortunately we just had nowhere to go and got caught up in it. The No. 31 Carlin Chevrolet was hit fairly hard and lost the front wing completely, so once we were restarted we had to come in for a new front wing.

The guys did a great job on that wing change and really on all of their stops all race, the strategy was really solid, and we were able to get our lap back and ultimately move our way into 11th. We were really hoping to move forward from our starting position of eighth and we definitely had the car to do it, but after the way the race started I’d say we’re more than happy with 11th.”
