The Creation Team comes fourth at Silverstone

17.09.2007: The Creation Team comes fourth at Silverstone

LE MANS SERIES 2007 ROUND FIVE – SILVERSTONE, GREAT BRITAIN

The Creation team today achieved its best result of the year so far at its home track of Silverstone in Northamptonshire. Jamie Campbell-Walter, Felipe Ortiz and Haruki Kurosawa drove the Creation CA07 to a fine fourth place in an action-packed 5 hours and 41 minutes of racing.

Under clear, bright skies and a strong wind, a marked contrast to the torrential rain of two years ago, Jamie Campbell-Walter of Scotland took the start of the 1,000 kilometre race and instantly made his mark on the LMP1 category. The Scot moved from his 10th place on the starting grid through to 6th by the end of lap five, using all the power available from the car’s 5.5 litre V10 Judd engine.

An early Safety Car period, caused by some advertising hoardings coming loose and falling onto the track, gave the team an opportunity pit early which not only temporarily dropped JC-W down the order but also put Creation out of sequence with many of its competitors.

An extremely strong double stint – during which time the Creation car not only challenged the thus-far-all-conquering Peugeots but actually led the race – meant that Campbell-Walter was able to hand over the car to Felipe Ortiz on lap 81 in good order.

The Spaniard also ran well during his single stint, keeping the car in contention within the top six, before passing the wheel to Haruki Kurosawa - new to the team for this race.

Unfortunately, during the race, the dashboard visor had become detached and the wind caused severe buffeting to the drivers’ helmets and heads and this in turn affected the Japanese driver’s neck, causing him considerable discomfort.

Felipe Ortiz was nominated by the team to finish the race and, despite some radio miscommunication which saw two unscheduled pit stops in the closing stages, the team recorded a fine finish behind a Peugeot and two Pescarolos.

Team Principal Ian Bickerton was delighted with the result, despite having nearly expired on the pitwall at the sight of his car unexpectedly coming down the pitlane not once but twice. "Jamie did a storming job in the first two and a half hours of the race – wonderful," he said.

"Felipe also had a strong stint which only dropped off towards the end as the effects of the loss of the dashboard visor came into play. Haruki then got in but, after about 17 laps, suffered ill effects (probably from the buffeting) so we had to have a quick strategy re-think.

We decided to put Felipe back in until the finish to give him as much seat time as possible. We’d earlier lost a lap to the safety car which was a bit unfortunate, but were pretty much guaranteed a top six place by that stage, so that’s what we did."

Felipe Ortiz commented, "It was a good result for us. I think at the start of the race we would have been very happy if we knew we would finish fourth. But with the Rollcentre finishing third there is a little bit of regret that we couldn’t have finished higher.

We lost a lap to the safety car and then a bit more time when I pitted twice. The first time, I thought I heard Smithy [engineer Ian Smith] say a few things on the radio but I couldn’t hear clearly and thought there might be a problem with the car so I came in, but it was okay.

The second time the dashboard readout disappeared so I had no data or fuel count and I didn’t know how much fuel I had left or how many laps to go until the end of the race and I got scared and came in. They all said, ‘no, continue’ so, in the end, fourth was a good result!"

Jamie Campbell-Walter was realistically cheerful about the overall result: "Where do I start? It was good, especially after the weekend we’d had; to finish fourth is unbelievable. We’d had such an ill-handling car on Friday, I can’t tell you how bad, but we managed to get it better and better over the practice sessions and, during the race, it all came good.

It was still a long way from being perfect – with another couple of test sessions I think we would have been even quicker in the race. I did my two stints without any problems and it was fantastic, the car was not bad at all, and I had a good tussle with Manu [Collard] for quite a few laps. What happened after that is another story!"

Haruki Kurosawa, whose colour and equilibrium had been restored by the end of the race, said, "The traffic was very heavy on this track today, but I tried to leave good space between us and other cars so had no accidents like in the last race. I tried to do good laps times in my stint because I wanted to do well for the team and I’m sorry I had problems with my neck. The team is very good and did a very good job today."
