THE CHALLENGE



Germany’s WTCR host venue offers a challenge like no other with its daunting 25.378-kilometre lap, 64 heart-stopping corners and changeable Eifel mountains weather. Opening for business in 1927 and a German Grand Prix regular until the late Niki Lauda’s accident in 1976, the Nürburgring Nordschleife joined the FIA World Touring Car Championship schedule from 2015-2017 as part of the ADAC Zurich 24h Rennen weekend.



The WTCR took over in 2018 and delivered even more action with Yvan Muller, Esteban Guerrieri and Thed Björk winning. Former DTM champion René Rast took part as a wildcard and was fast but out of luck.

Weekend report: Touring car legend Yvan Muller was the big winner at the world’s toughest track, adding P3 in Race 3 to his R1 triumph and move to the top of the standings. Argentine Esteban Guerrieri joined his compatriots, the great Juan Manuel Fangio and triple World Touring Car champion José María López, with his first Nordschleife victory following a thrilling drive in Race 2 ahead of Pepe Oriola, with Thed Björk claiming his first win of 2018 to complete a memorable event for Muller’s YMR team.


Having won Race 1, Muller claimed fourth in R2 before completing the podium in R3 in his Hyundai i30 N. His performance, coupled with a weekend of woe for erstwhile title leader Gabriele Tarquini, put him on top by 19 points. In contrast, Italian Tarquini endured a miserable trip to Germany, crashing out of Race 1 and 2 and non-starting the third.



Having lost out to team boss Muller in Race 1 from the DHL pole, 2017 World Touring Car champion Björk made the most of his second top start in Race 3, holding off an impressive challenge from Frédéric Vervisch.

etween driving flat out on the Nordschleife and my Maxwell Smart Agent 86 celebration, which I had planned for a while, I am quite excited and tired,” said Guerrieri. “It was a tough race. We knew what was our strong points on the Civic Type R and what were the weak points so we pushed for the strong. I did a very good start and we managed to take P1 and control the race. Yesterday we couldn’t find a good balance. But last night we looked after every detail and made the car as good as it was yesterday. We pushed and here we are, P1.”

What’s new for 2019?


Standardised points… for top 15
WTCR / OSCARO gets a new points system for 2019 with the aim of ensuring more drivers can score points more often. The top 15 drivers according to the final classification of Races 1, 2 and 3 are rewarded as follows:

POS: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15
PTS: 25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1





The same points-scoring system is applied to the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO for Teams. Wildcard drivers are no longer eligible for points.

First Qualifying pace rewarded with points
Points are distributed not only following Second Qualifying as in 2018 but following First Qualifying as well. The fastest five drivers according to the final classification score as follows:

POS: 1-2-3-4-5
PTS: 5-4-3-2-1

On-event staff numbers restricted


Ten armbands are issued per team and only those operational staff assigned an armband, having registered with the FIA before each event, are allowed to work on cars for duration of an event.
