207 Peugeot Spider Cup Silverstone - Dino Lunardi wins in style

16.09.2007: 207 Peugeot Spider Cup Silverstone - Dino Lunardi wins in style

SILVERSTONE / September 16, 2007 – Race 2

With two races remaining in the inaugural 207 Spider Cup, Dino Lunardi (RBA) has played a potentially decisive hand by winning the weekend's two races at Silverstone. He consequently tops the provisional points table and stands out as favourite to claim the top prize: a test day at the wheel of the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP.

Nothing is by any means over yet, however, since three other drivers are still seriously in contention, namely Grégory Guilvert (Lompech Sport), Julien Briché (JSB ompétition) and Julien Schell (Pegasus Racing).

The last encounter of the year at Magny-Cours, where the 207 Spider Cup will feature as part of the Super Série FFSA programme in October, promises to be an absolute thriller, with four drivers still in the hunt for the title. Given how close the gaps are at the sharp end of the leaderboard after the visit to Silverstone, nobody will be able to afford to make the slightest mistake. Guilvert and Lunardi are split by just 16 points, there are only 12 points in it between Briché and Guilvert, while Schell trails Briché by a mere three units.

Like yesterday, Dino Lunardi left his opponents very little chance to beat him. True, despite starting from pole position, the Frenchman allowed Julien Schell to slip fleetingly into the lead and the latter began to hope that his recent spell of bad luck was about to end. A few kilometres later, though, Lunardi was back in front and then, while his chasers Schell, Guilvert and Briché concentrated on keeping each other at bay, he was able to progressively up the pace.

A mistake by Schell on Lap 2 allowed both Guilvert and Briché through, but Briché was sidelined by an engine problem shortly afterwards. Meanwhile, Guilvert was unable to close on Lunardi who went on to claim his second success of the weekend. Despite pressure from Benoît Lison (RBA), who succeeded in getting the better of Maxime Dubrulle (JSB Compétition), Schell was the third podium finisher.

The final part of the race was essentially incident-free, except for two particularly fierce duals between Marlène Broggi (Lompech Sport) and Germany's Oliver Freymuth (ASK Motorsport) – with the final word going to the only lady driver on the grid who finished ninth – and the scrap for 11th place between Frenchmen Frédéric Bry (RBA) and Jean-Charles Miginiac (Lopech Sport) who eventually came out on top. Had it not been for a spin, Denis Autier could well have joined their fight.

It was a calmer race for local driver Chris Harris who crossed the line in seventh place behind Marcel Sciabbarrasi. The other Briton Simon Moulton (Southgate Motorsport), who had been counting a great deal on doing well at his home round, was prevented from capitalising on his excellent sixth place on the grid by a gearshift problem, while Belgium's Maxime Martin (Boutsen Energy Racing) was plagued by engine trouble .

There were smiles on the other hand in the Team Drivex camp which saw both its cars reach the finish as Alvaro Espinosa (8th) and Jorge Baeza (14th) harvested valuable Nations Cup points to the detriment of Belgium.

Dino LUNARDI: "It's been a perfect weekend. My intention was always to try to take the lead in the championship and the cushion I enjoy this evening is a welcome bonus! Today's race was tougher than yesterday's because my car was more nervous. I concentrated hard from start to finish and tried to drive as consistently as possible to keep Grégory at bay."

Grégory GUILVERT: "It was a pretty average race for me. I didn't enjoy it but that was my fault. My driving lacked confidence and, despite running a strong second, with a target ahead of me to chase, I just didn't seem to be able to loosen up."

Julien SCHELL: "It's always nice to finish a weekend on a high note. I briefly led but my car was unfortunately very difficult to drive and it was impossible to match the pace of the front-runners… but at least I tried."
