Campos' Jack Aitken grabs third and fourth place finishes in Le Castellet to maintain title fight alive

23.06.2019: Anglo-Korean Aitken added another podium finish to his tally at Paul Ricard and now ranks 3rd in the Drivers’ standings with 85 points. Frenchman Boccolacci’s early retirement dashed his chances

Anglo-Korean Aitken added another podium finish to his tally at Paul Ricard and now ranks 3rd in the Drivers’ standings with 85 points. Frenchman Boccolacci’s early retirement dashed his chances of points

Campos Racing completed another strong weekend of the FIA Formula 2 Championship on French soil. The Circuit Paul Ricard, which plays host to the Formula 1 French Grand Prix this weekend, saw another brilliant performance delivered by Campos Racing with Jack Aitken securing another podium finish to strengthen his title bid. Dorian Boccolacci displayed good pace at his home round despite he couldn’t collect more points for the championship.

On Friday, Aitken had the pace to fight for pole position and finally had to settle for third on the grid with a lap time of 1m43.401s. Boccolacci also lapped below the 1:44 mark and clocked a time of 1m43.812s to start from ninth on Saturday.

Aitken stormed past Sergio Sette Camara and Guan Yu Zhou at the start and moved up to second behind Nyck de Vries. The first Virtual Safety Car was deployed in lap 1 following two separated crashes involving Nikita Mazepin / Ralph Boschung and Mick Schumacher / Sean Gelael. Unfortunately, Boccolacci had gained two spots in the first lap but he was forced to stop on track due to technical issues. Shortly after, those race incidents brought out a lengthy red flag to recover the stricken cars.

20 minutes later, the race resumed behind the safety car with Aitken running in second place and built up a 1.1s gap on Sette Camara. The Anglo-Korean driver made his mandatory pit stop in lap 7 and he managed to take the virtual lead when de Vries pitted. Aitken and de Vries swept past Mahaveer Regunathan on Mistral with the Dutchman moving into the virtual lead a few moments later.

After the pit stop sequence, Aitken was running solidly in second position and he improved the fastest lap several times to pull away from Sette Camara. With another Virtual Safety Car late in the race, the field went back green in lap 27 and Sette Camara came into DRS range to move past Aitken for second. Finally, the Campos Racing driver brought a third place home.

On Sunday, Aitken started in sixth and he made a really good start to be up to second behind Anthoine Hubert. Aitken moved within DRS range of Hubert with the fastest lap of the race but he couldn’t make a move and both Juan Manuel Correa and Guan Yu Zhou finally passed him later. There were no more changes up the front and Aitken took the flag in fourth place. Boccolacci finished 13th.

Aitken now sits 3rd in the Drivers’ standings with 85 points. Campos Racing ranks fourth in the Teams’ standings with 115 points.

The FIA Formula 2 will continue its non-stop action next weekend at the Red Bull Ring.

Adrián Campos (President of Campos Racing):
“We remain in FIA Formula 2 title hunt. Our target was to score valuable points for the championship and we met our goals. Jack claimed another podium this weekend and now we need to continue along the same path at the Red Bull Ring, which also marks the midway point of the 2019 season Let’s push!.”

Jack Aitken (Driver of Campos Racing)
“Feeling a bit frustrated because I think we should have had two podiums, just some small mistakes on my side, but I’ll learn from that no doubt. And we still came away with a very strong points haul, and moved up to P3 in the championship, so I can’t be too unhappy!”
