The fifth race weekend of the 2019 FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) presented by Oscaro was part of the support package of the 24-hour race at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife that three-time F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart famously referred to as the Green Hell. Tom Coronel participated with his Spanish car run by Belgian team Comtoyou DHL Team Cupra Racing.

The challenging race track in the German Eifel region undisputedly is the favourite track of the Dutch driver. Next to the challenges of the 25.378 kilometres long track with its 64 totally different corners, the (often wet) weather conditions, low clouds and fog and drivers who got off the track are all playing a role.

Tom, who also successfully raced the Kondo Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 in the 24-hour race drove his Cupra to 18th on the starting grid for the first race. That was held on the Friday and resulted into a 13th place finish. In the second race, Coronel started from twelfth place, went through a lot of action and finished tenth. In the third and final WTCR race, Tom Coronel took the chequered flag in sixth position.

“This certainly was a tough weekend with the three FIA WTCR races to start with and then a 24-hour race with the Nissan,” Tom Coronel starts. “But I am by no means complaining, because for me, this is and will always be the most beautiful circuit you can drive on as a race driver. It meant that the schedule for Thursday was extremely packed with practice and qualifying for both classes.

Moreover, the weather changed a few times, too, which made it really difficult when I was out in the Cupra and the windscreen wipers failed on my flying lap. I had to return to the pits, but a lap like that lasts over nine minutes. We changed the steering wheel and that solved the problem.

In qualifying for races two and three, the track was half wet, half dry. And the sheer size of the track means that it can be dry on one part while heavy rain is falling at the other end. A difficult situation in which I opted for slicks on the front wheels and rain tyres on the rear wheels.

That went quite well, but there was also a slow zone in which we were only allowed to drive at 60 km/h. I know how strict they are on that, so I respected that limit. The guys who run with four slicks were slightly faster. For me, twelfth place on the grid was all I could do.

On the way to the grid for the first race, I noticed that something was wrong with the rear wheel bearing, an issue that couldn’t be solved quickly, so I just started the race with it. On the final lap, the wheel broke and after that, it felt like I was driving a water bed. Fortunately, my gap to the rest was big enough and I didn’t lose any positions anymore. The second race was super. I was able to keep up nicely with some nice actions.

From an excellent slipstream, I even managed to overtake Norbert Michelisz, the winner of the opening race. Just before the finish, I wanted to share that with the team, but instead of pushing the button for radio contact with the team, I pushed the ‘full course yellow’ button. As a result, the car immediately reduced its speed to 80 km/h and others got past me again just as easily.

Stupid, of course, and a pity, too, because now I finished tenth. But everything worked nicely and that gave me confidence for the third race that started for me in a sandwich between Farfus and Monteiro. Fortunately, I didn’t g any damage and I could still start the race. First, I overtook a few guys and then also my teammate on the final lap, so I finished sixth.

My best result in the FIA WTCR. It shows that we are getting closer and also finish further up. The next race is at Vila Real. A street circuit where I won a WTCC race in 2016, but the year after, I also had that famous accident with the fire truck there. Let’s hope that we can really go for it this time. In any case, the feeling is good!”
