2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship
Round 6 : Spielberg, Austria

The Stakes

The Austrian town of Spielberg plays host to the teams and drivers of the F2 paddock for Round 6 of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship, hot on the heels of last weekend’s sizzling action in the south of France.

Sérgio Sette Câmara put his DAMS machine on top of the timesheets during Free Practice to begin a weekend of incredible action at Circuit Paul Ricard, and kept it there in qualifying to secure only his second pole position in F2.

ART Grand Prix’s Nyck de Vries seared off the line in the Feature Race, leaping from P4 to P1 into the first corner, as the Dutchman continued his red hot form to make it two Feature Race wins in a row. Home-grown hero Anthoine Hubert then basked in the glory of Sprint Race success to complete a thrilling weekend.

De Vries (121 pts) extended his Championship lead over Nicholas Latifi (109 pts) to 12 points, with Campos Racing’s Jack Aitken (85 pts) 24 points further back in third; DAMS continue to lead the way in the Teams’ Championship with 189 points, 46 ahead of UNI-Virtuosi Racing (143 pts) in second. ART remain third with 127 points.

Round 6 of the season takes place at the Red Bull Ring in the scenic Styrian mountains. Despite the short circuit length the drivers will look to push hard on the smooth surface, and with Pirelli supplying the teams with Soft and Super Soft tyre compounds, we should see plenty of intense wheel-to-wheel action.

Mario Isola, Pirelli Head of F1 and Car Racing

“Austria presents a marked contrast to the last round at Paul Ricard a few days ago, but we can expect similarly warm, or perhaps even hotter conditions. This means that F2 drivers will have to pay particular attention to thermal degradation on the supersoft in particular, while carefully managing the soft as well.”

Season Stats

12 The points gap between Championship leader Nyck de Vries (121 pts) at the top of the standings and Nicholas Latifi (109 pts) in second place.

336 The number of Drivers’ Championship points still available this season.

87 The number of laps Championship leader Nyck de Vries has led so far this season, 50 more than nearest title rival Nicholas Latifi who has led 37.

400 Providing it runs to full distance, the Feature Race at the Red Bull Ring will consist of 400 corners.

Noteworthy

The F2 race lap record at the Red Bull Ring is 1:15.854, set by Nobuharu Matsushita with ART Grand Prix in 2017

The last two Feature Races in Austria have been won from pole position. Incidentally both winners also went on to be crowned FIA Formula 2 Champion later that year

Three rookies stood on the podium after the Sprint Race in France, with BWT Arden’s Anthoine Hubert taking victory on home soil ahead of Juan Manuel Correa of Sauber Junior Team by Charouz and UNI-Virtuosi Racing’s Guanyu Zhou

Hubert became the first ever French driver to win an F2 race in front of a home crowd

The Frenchman has 65 points (7th) in the Championship after his second Sprint Race win of the campaign, the only rookie to have taken the chequered flag this season. However, Zhou (5th) is the highest ranked rookie in the standings with 76 points

MP Motorsport’s Mahaveer Raghunathan will serve a one-event suspension and misses both races at the Red Bull Ring after amassing 12 penalty points this season

Patricio O’Ward will take the spare seat at MP Motorsport, while Ryan Tveter replaces Ralph Boschung at Trident. Arjun Maini also returns to F2 in Austria, replacing Dorian Boccolacci at Campos Racing.

Championship leader Nyck de Vries is the only driver to have scored a pole position (Spain), a Feature Race win (Spain and France) and a Sprint Race win (Monaco) this season

De Vries did not score any points in Round 5’s Sprint Race at Circuit Paul Ricard, making it the very first time this season that the Dutchman (and ART Grand Prix) failed to add to his tally

DAMS (189 pts) are the only team to have scored points in every race so far this season. The French outfit are 46 points ahead of UNI-Virtuosi Racing (143 pts) at the top of the standings
